An update on emerging tensions in northern Ethiopia from Anna Lord, Chief Executive:

We are closely following reports of escalating tensions and violence in northern Ethiopia, particularly in Tigray and along the border with Afar.

Following years of devastating conflict, communities across the region continue to face significant challenges as they rebuild their lives. Recent developments are deeply concerning, particularly given the potential impact on communities that have already experienced displacement and disruption to essential services.

Our partners are monitoring the situation closely, and we remain committed to supporting vulnerable communities as circumstances develop.

Undene has lived with podoconiosis (podo) for over 30 years. Left untreated, she experienced intense pain and physical changes to her feet that made it difficult for her to walk and provide for her family.

With the support of our partner, Action on Podoconiosis and Integrated Development Organisation (APIDO), Undene can now walk without pain once again.

There are many more people living with podo in Ethiopia, including Yantule.

Podoconiosis (podo) is a form of elephantiasis affecting around 1.5 million people in Ethiopia. For those living with this neglected tropical disease, each step they take can bring agonising pain.

Melkam Addis Amet! Today we celebrate the Ethiopian new year.

This date marks the end of the heavy rains and beginning of the harvest season. Bright yellow flowers, adey abeba, bloom in the hills across Ethiopia welcoming in the new year as a symbol of new beginnings. Happy new year from all of us at Ethiopiaid. 🌼

Happy Ashenda - ርሑስ በዓል ኣሸንዳ! - to all those celebrating across Ethiopia this week 🌸✨

Rooted in rich heritage, Ashenda is a beautiful celebration of women and girls that traditionally takes place across Northern Ethiopia. Over the course of the festival, women gather in traditional dress to dance, sing, and celebrate womanhood, culture and community.

While security concerns in Tigray have led to the cancellation or disruption of some major planned celebrations this year, we are wishing everyone a peaceful and meaningful Ashenda, wherever and however they are able to celebrate. 💜🌿

Haddi has witnessed mothers and newborns die from preventable complications simply because help could not reach them in time.

Haddi is a Traditional Birth Attendant in a remote area of Afar – her community is already struggling through drought, severe food shortages and some mothers live days away from the nearest health centre.

Today, thanks to training from our partner, APDA, Haddi is equipped with safe birthing kits, maternal health training and support from local health workers.

A gift of €60 to our Emergency Appeal could help provide 45 safe delivery sets, so women like Haddi can continue to ensure each delivery is clean and safe.
