- Sight Loss Support Officer - 37.5 hours a week

Last week we took a group of and people we support on a Try a Train and Art Workshop experience.

The day began with a short train journey using Passenger Assist, giving participants the opportunity to learn how to navigate train travel safely and confidently. Being able to use public transport can be life-changing for people with sight loss, opening up access to work, social activities, appointments and independent travel. Having the chance to practice in a supportive environment helped build confidence and showed that train travel can be both accessible and achievable.

After the journey, the group enjoyed a short walk to a local village hall, where they took part in a nature-inspired artist-led workshop. Using tactile materials and drawing inspiration from the natural world around them, participants explored their creativity, shared experiences and enjoyed trying something new.

Last week, our West Berkshire Social Group enjoyed a fantastic adapted Spa Day at Donnington Spa in Newbury.

The group made the most of the spa facilities, enjoyed a relaxing 25-minute treatment and shared lunch together. For many of the and people we support, opportunities like this can be difficult to access independently, making the day an extra special experience.

From the soothing textures and sensations of the treatments to the calming environment of the spa, members were able to enjoy a truly tactile experience and try something that they might not otherwise have the chance to do.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! 🎄
Help make a difference this Christmas with Berkshire Vision!

We're looking for volunteers to support our Christmas bucket collection at Reading Station on Friday 4th December, from 8am to 3pm. Just one hour of your time can help us raise vital funds and awareness, enabling us to continue supporting and children and adults across Berkshire.

We're recruiting a qualified Vision Rehabilitation Specialist (VRS)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified VRS to join our team at local sight loss charity, Berkshire Vision. We are a small, social, and supportive team, and we would be thrilled to welcome someone who shares our passion for making a difference.

The role is funded for 22.5 hours per week for three years initially with potential to extend. We are open to discussing different working patterns between 3 and 5 days per week, as well as to both employed and self-employed candidates.

Our minibuses play a vital role in helping the and people we support take part in our social activities and adapted sports, especially those who might otherwise be unable to attend. By providing safe, accessible transport, we’re removing barriers and making sure everyone has the opportunity to access activities that help build independence and reduce loneliness and isolation.

Our team have been out and about across Berkshire over the last few weeks, raising awareness of sight loss, sharing information about our services, and speaking to prospective volunteers. We want to make sure that everyone affected by sight loss knows they're not alone, and that Berkshire Vision can support them.

We've enjoyed attending a range of community events, including the Reading Deaf Centre Information Day, Older People's Day at Broad Street Mall, the Wokingham Volunteer Fair, Older People's Question Time in Slough, the Big Slough Summit, Newbury Market, the WAM Community Forum, and the Reading Borough Council Wellbeing Event. We've also been delivering talks to local WI groups and Women's Town Guilds.

Connecting with local communities is an important part of what we do. The more people who know about Berkshire Vision, the more people we can reach with the information, support and opportunities they need.

Salary: £26,325

As a Sight Loss Support Officer you'll be playing a vital role in helping people with sight loss to live independently. You'll assess individual needs, provide ongoing support, help people to overcome barriers and build confidence through the use of technology, aids, and practical skills. It's a rewarding role that makes a real difference to people's lives every day.

This is a 37.5 hours a week role, based from our Reading Office, with frequent travel across Berkshire.

It's Get Online Week!

Did you know that only 1 in 3 UK adults are comfortably online? For people living with , the risk of digital exclusion can be even greater!

That's why our Tech Buddy volunteers are so important. They provide one-to-one support, helping people with sight loss build confidence using smartphones, tablets, computers and assistive technology. Whether it's learning how to send emails, access website and apps, shop online, or make the most of accessibility features, our Tech Buddies help people gain the skills they need to get online.

As part of Get Online Week, we're joining the National Digital Inclusion Network in raising awareness of digital exclusion and calling for a more inclusive digital future. Help us spread the word and support change so everyone can access the information, services, and opportunities they need.
