Scan the QR code in the poster or follow the link below to register for a free workshop organised by the Department of Film, Theatre & Television, University of Reading on 21st October, 5-8pm at Whitley Social Club and Cafe.

The workshop will include:

✅ Q&A with filmmaker Kevin Kellier about his creative journey. Kevin is a Reading-based film and content creator who was born and raised in Whitley. Largely self-taught, he has worked on many short films and music videos and currently runs several YouTube channels, with the largest having over 600k subscribers.

✅ Film screening + discussion of a short film made by and with Whitley community members in 2023. We want to know what Whitley residents need today to access creative opportunities in the local area more easily.

✅ Information on Screen Berkshire, the British Film Institute-funded skills cluster for Berkshire that acts as a bridge between local residents, freelance crew, training providers, studios, suppliers and content producers.

✅ Support to sign up for upcoming training opportunities and updates via the Screen Berkshire database.

No prior filmmaking experience is required but places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. The deadline to register is 5pm on Wednesday 14 October.

A very big thank you to the wonderful Daniel Brewerton for dropping by our 4ME Activities Service. He blew everyone with an incredible performance of golden oldies that had the whole room smiling. Looking to build confidence, learn new skills, and make new friends? Reading Mencap's Life Skills Club — specially tailored for adults with learning disabilities — is welcoming new members! Join us in a warm, supportive environment to pick up useful everyday skills, take part in fun practical activities like gardening, and meet great people in the local community. The club meets monthly on a Monday morning between 10am - 12 noon at The Museum of English Rural Life. Cost: £4 per session

Carbon monoxide (CO) is known as the silent killer. Because you can’t see, hear, taste or smell it, having a working CO alarm in your home can alert you to danger and help keep you safe. Need a free alarm? Thanks to our partnership with SGN, we have CO alarms available for people with learning disabilities and their families and carers. Call us on 0118 966 2518 or email us at [email protected] if you would like one. Don’t forget to test your alarms monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.

Join us for tea and cake and take part in our AGM on Monday 19 October at 21 Alexandra Road, Reading RG1 5PE from 1-3pm. The business of the AGM will be short and business-like as usual, after which there will be refreshments and the chance to chat with staff and trustees and catch up with friends. Tickets are on sale for one of the highlights of the Reading Mencap year - the Christmas Disco for adults with a learning disability and their family and carers! The disco will be held on Wednesday 2 December at Earley Home Guard Social Club, Pitts Lane, Reading RG6 1BT at 7.30 - 10pm. £10 per person (includes 1 carer/family member). Worried about energy bills over the winter? Through our partnership with SGN, Reading Mencap is here to help people with a learning disability and their carers stay warm, safe, and supported.
Here are some practical tips to help cut down your heating and electricity costs:
Save on Your Heating Bills:
• If you have a combi boiler, you can lower the flow temperature to 60°C or below to save around £112 a year
• Keep furniture and clothes away from radiators so warm air can circulate freely, helping your heating work more efficiently
• Draught-proof windows, doors, and letterboxes, and close your curtains before it gets dark to lock in the heat.
Save on Your Electricity Bills:
• Switch appliances off at the plug instead of leaving them on standby and use LED lightbulbs.
• Run your washing machine at 30°C to keep clothes clean while using less energy.
• Only run your dishwasher and washing machine when they are completely full.
• Boil only the water you need in the kettle, use a slow cooker instead of an oven, and use a microwave to reheat food.
