There's a lot to unpack in this graphic created by NEDA (Cameroon)! Though targeting disability prevention in Africa, the message is relatable throughout Asia and Latin America too.

MASL supports a network of clinics with an annual shipment of epilepsy medication. The lead clinic at Connaught Hospital is attended by 130-150 people each Thursday. The Purchase Order has been raised for this year's medication shipment and we share the JustGiving link below for anyone who would like to support this work. Lives are transformed through access to medication and the clinic figures are compelling: 70% of patients have no further seizures after starting treatment; 25% experience a reduction.

The epilepsy treatment gap in Sierra Leone is 90% - meaning that around 100,000 people are living with untreated epilepsy.

Globally 30–35 million people are living with untreated epilepsy.

Untreated epilepsy destroys lives. Please help us to buy the annual shipment of medication to the network of epilepsy clinics in Sierra Leone. We need Β£14,000.

We are devastated to learn of the death of Tina Senesie, the MCH and trainee nurse, who took great care of Mary, our SLAPWA member in hospital in Makeni and again in Freetown for many months. Tina became one of the family by Mary's bedside, changing dressings and taking care of Mary's twins who were just one week old when she had her first major surgery, and then 18 months old when more surgery took place in Freetown. Tina enabled Mary to spend time with her new babies and family when she was very ill, including organising the birthday party for Mary shortly before she sadly died. And now we have lost Tina at just 31 years old. We are in shock that this could happen and devastated for Tina's daughter, husband and the family in Njala.

β€˜Studies in Africa suggest that most people with albinism die from
skin cancer between the ages of 30 and 40’.
(Report by I.Ero, Independent Expert for the United Nations, 2015).

On World Cancer Day we say a big thank you to Altruist Sunscreen for the generous donations of sunscreen for people with albinism in Sierra Leone. We cannot emphasise how valuable a ready supply of FREE sunscreen is to people with albinism. Over 95% of recipients have never used sunscreen before as the cost is prohibitive. Sunscreen and protective hats and clothing save lives: it is that simple. We are already seeing a noticeable difference in the skin health of people who have been using the cream for a year or so; children in particular are avoiding the development of blisters in the early years. Our five year partnership with the Sierra Leone Association for Persons With Albinism is going from strength to strength. Contact us if you would like to support this work: we purchase hats, sunglasses, long sleeve clothing, and provide other skin care items such as moisturiser and lip balm.

The image shows the receipt of boxes of sunscreen last August at the offices of Sierra Leone Association for Persons With Albinism.
