Huge thanks to Round & About magazine for featuring an article in their June 2026 issue about the fundraising activity and wonderful new roof at St Bartholomew's church, Lower Basildon, Berkshire.

If you are looking for a day out in the countryside, June is a particularly beautiful time of year to visit the 13th century church, surrounding meadow and riverside walks along the Thames.

St Bartholomew's church welcomes visitors daily from 10 am to 4 pm and we love it when people sign the visitor's book.

"They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them."

This passage from Robert Laurence Binyon's (1868-1943) poem "For The Fallen" was first published in The Times newspaper on 21 September 1914.

It resonates today as we remember those who lost their lives in war and who are buried at St Bartholomew's, Lower Basildon, Berkshire.

Robert Laurence Binyon was buried at nearby St Mary's Church, Aldworth, in 1943.

Although the churchyard at St Bartholomew's remains open to visitors, the church remains closed for the new roof renovation until 23rd December 2025

With many thanks 🌿

It is so lovely to see a section of one of William Wailes (1808-1881) stained glass window designs from St Bartholomew's, Lower Basildon used on the front and inside back cover of the recently published Annual Review 2024-2025.

Inside is a spread on the recent successful fundraising activities (led by a local Fundraising Board, chaired by Alison Laing) to raise money for the church's new roof.

There's also special mention for Peter Thorn who was recently voted Supporter of The Year - West.

The have awarded this to Peter for his work to keep St Bartholomew's, Lower Basildon running smoothly and open for visitors.

"He has looked after the churchyard, keeping the pathways clear and liaising with contractors where needed. Peter is the keyholder of the church and also been the 'star' of the roof fundraising appeal and is a passionate, all-round, solid supporter of CCT".

Keep your eyes peeled for updates on the roof's progress both here and in a forthcoming issue of The Basildon Country Neighbour magazine.
