Today is National Eat Your Vegetables Day 🥕🥦

If you have young children, you'll know that trying new foods isn't always straightforward!

Children aren't born liking particular foods - they learn to enjoy different tastes and textures over time. That's why it can help to make exploring food fun, with no pressure to eat it.

One simple idea is making food faces together. Children can see, touch, smell and talk about different foods while getting creative at the same time.

Remember, it's completely normal for babies and young children to need lots of opportunities to experience a new food before they decide whether they like it, it may need to be offered many times before it becomes a favourite.

Every time your child explores a new food, they're learning...even if they don't take a bite.

What creative ways have you found to encourage your child to try something new? 🍅🫑🥕

We don't wait until children can run before letting them crawl.
We don't wait until they can sing before playing them music.
And we don't need to wait until they can read before sharing books.

When children hold books, turn pages, spot familiar pictures, join in with sounds and stories, and talk about what they can see, they're building the foundations for reading.

Books aren't just for readers.

Every shared story is helping your child build the skills they'll need to become a confident reader.

👶 Mental health? For babies?

Yes.

A baby's mental health is about feeling safe, secure, loved and understood through their relationships with the people who care for them.

This year's Infant Mental Health Awareness Week focuses on attunement – tuning in to your baby's cues and responding with warmth and care.

It can be as simple as returning a smile, making eye contact, responding to a cry, sharing a cuddle or having a back-and-forth 'conversation' together.

These everyday moments help babies feel understood and build the foundations for learning, relationships and wellbeing.

The good news is that many parents and carers are already supporting their baby's mental health through these small moments of connection every day.

ORIM

Opportunities - Recognition - Interaction - Modelling

When we understand how ORIM helps learning, we're more likely to incorporate it into everyday life.

The big difference is NOT how well we ourselves got on at school, but what we do with our children: talking, playing, singing, sharing books & stories, & keeping ORIM in mind.

🧠 Schemas: making the most of how your child plays 🎨👣

Have you noticed your child doing the same type of play over and over again? Like filling and emptying bags, climbing in and out of boxes, or hiding things under cushions?

These repeated play behaviours are called schemas. They are a natural and important part of how young children learn and make sense of the world.

By spotting what kind of play your child enjoys most, you can join in and help them learn even more. When you follow your child’s interests in play, it supports their:

✅learning
✅development
✅behaviour

You don’t need any special toys or skills. Everyday activities at home, in the park or while shopping can all be great learning opportunities.

⬇️Use our Schemas Play Patterns chart to get simple ideas for each type of play. It shows how children’s favourite patterns, like connecting things or moving objects, can be supported through fun, everyday routines like washing up, building with blocks or heling with the shopping.

Tomorrow is World Environment Day. 🌿

If you've ever found your pockets, pushchair or bag mysteriously filling up with sticks, stones and 'special' leaves, you'll know how fascinated children are by the natural world.

Exploring outdoors helps children learn, ask questions and develop a connection with nature. Understanding the world around them is the first step towards caring for it - and wanting to protect it for the future.

👂Early maths starts with the words children hear every day.

Before children can count, they need to know number names: one, two, three! Stories, songs, rhymes, games and everyday routines all help children become familiar with number words.

Try saying numbers together while climbing steps, getting dressed, reading a book or singing a favourite rhyme.

🦖 It's National Dinosaur Day!

Somewhere between reading the same dinosaur book for the 87th time and being corrected by a four-year-old on our dino facts, many of us parents have become accidental dinosaur experts.

We're basically ready to be consultants on Jurassic Park 😎
