Today is International Literacy Day.

Literacy gives people greater choice, independence and access to opportunity. Yet 739 million young people and adults worldwide still lack basic literacy skills.

At Peeple, we know that the foundations of literacy develop long before children can read or write. Talking, singing, sharing books and telling stories all help children build their listening, communication and language skills.

Children can often ‘talk’ a story before they can read or write one. Try using a familiar or favourite story as the starting point for making up a new story together. It’s a simple, enjoyable way to encourage conversation and imagination.

It’s never too early to start teaching children about road safety—especially as younger siblings often join the school run on balance bikes or scooters.

Songs are a fun and memorable way to introduce simple messages, such as stopping at red lights, waiting safely and knowing when it’s time to go. Why not sing this song together before your next journey, then look out for traffic lights and practice the words along the way?

Like millions around the world, we were gutted to hear about Dolly Parton’s death on Tuesday evening. Her incredible music and warmth brought people together in a way that few other performers can. But her legacy reaches far beyond the stage.

Through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, she helped put hundreds of millions of books into children’s hands around the world, encouraging a love of books and stories from the very earliest years.

On BBC Oxfordshire radio at about 8.15 this morning you can hear our CEO Sally Smith discussing the amazing benefits that this brings. Here in Oxfordshire, we’re proud to run a local Imagination Library, as part of our Growing Minds partnership with the The Berin Centre and Home-Start Oxford. Every month, babies and young children in Littlemore, Rose Hill, Berinsfield and The Leys receive a free book through the post – giving families more opportunities to cuddle up, share stories, chat and enjoy books together.

This is thanks to the subsidised books and postage provided by Dolly's Imagination Library, and local donors who enable us to fund them. Over the past 12 years, almost 100,000 books have been given to children locally.

Dolly understood that sharing books is about much more than learning to read. Stories can spark children’s imagination and language, and create precious opportunities for children and the people who care for them to spend time talking, sharing and enjoying being together. What a wonderful legacy.

When school starts, practising these skills doesn’t have to stop. You can continue building them into everyday routines at home, while your child develops their confidence and independence in the classroom.

Every child develops in their own way and at their own pace. Some skills may take longer to learn, and that’s completely normal. Teachers and school staff will get to know your child, celebrate their progress and give them the support they need as they learn and grow.

When your child starts school, you can keep practising these skills at home as part of your everyday routine.

As the new school term looms, many children will be feeling big emotions about returning, especially after such a long break.

We can help by talking with children about feelings, so that they learn to recognise and name different emotions. By the age of four children are learning that it's possible to feel mixed emotions, but they will still need support managing big feelings.

It's the summer holidays and screen time has invariably increased for everyone in the home. There can be a lot of guilt surrounding screen time, from the amount that we as adults have to what our children (of varying ages) consume.

This guide is no way intended as a preachy post - we enjoy a scroll as much as the next person - but rather an information post. When we are equipped with all the info, we can then make informed choices.
