💭 What does your work involve?
🧡 A big part of my role is offering counselling sessions to clients, either face-to-face, online or over the phone. I coordinate all the referrals we receive, and let potential clients know how our counselling service works. I also get the opportunity to support Jo, who makes up the other half of the Counselling Team, and we work together to help shape our Counselling Service to be as helpful as possible.
💭 Why do you think counselling is so important?
🧡 Counselling is so important as it offers a space to talk about things that might be difficult to talk about elsewhere, with someone who won't judge or pressure you to talk. It offers a confidential, safe place that's solely yours, and where you can be truly you - and where you don't need to carry it all on your own.
💭 What happens in sessions?
🧡 As a counsellor, I'm here to meet clients with curiosity, empathy and care, and to sit alongside as we name the unpleasant emotions or celebrate the achievements (to name just a couple things counselling offers!). There can be a lot of power in knowing there's a space where you don't have to contain it all / suppress it all, and to me it's truly a privilege to sit alongside my clients with their thoughts and emotions so that they aren't alone with it all.
💭 What is one thing you wish people knew about counselling?
🧡 You don't need a specific reason, or for something 'big/specific' to have happened to come to counselling. It might be that you just want some space and time that's just for you, with someone external, with no pressure or fear of judgement, or being told what to do. We might explore heavy things that have happened, but it doesn't have to be a space for just that. It's a space to bring whatever's going on for you at your pace - whether that's wanting to vent, needing a safe place to express your thoughts and emotions, wanting to explore relationships in life. It can also be a place to learn how to look after yourself and understand yourself better, or celebrate things that have gone well. There's so much that counselling can offer, and we're here to sit alongside you on your journey.
