Reconciliation Initiatives (RI) recently ran a peacemaking training conference for clergy in the The Anglican Church of Kenya.

In Kenya, local clergy are respected public figures. Families and community members routinely bring disputes directly to the parish priest for mediation. These can include land and family inheritance issues, marital tensions, and tribal frictions.

Revd Fedis Nyagah, RI’s Kenya Project Manager, said:

“This training came as an answer to prayer for many. Conflict will always be there. But how leaders look at it, and how leaders behave even during times of tension and conflict really matters.”

It was a great pleasure for our Director, Alastair McKay, to have an opportunity to hear Anderson Jeremiah, the Bishop of Edmonton, speaking Churches Together in England gathering of leaders from charities working nationally. So many resonances with our programme.

A team from Reconciliation Initiatives recently travelled to Kenya to deliver a specialist course designed to help local Anglican leaders address church and community disputes, and be equipped to provide practical training for others in their dioceses.

Winfred, an Archdeacon in the Diocese of Kirinyaga, was among those who attended the week-long Peacemaking Training of Trainers course. She said the programme has provided her with the tools and confidence to handle local conflicts.

She said: "After being equipped this week, I feel courageous and strong to handle a particular case."

The programme focused on practical tools, and promoting good process for addressing the inevitable tensions that arise in community life.

Winfred now plans to share the processes, skills and insights with others across her diocese.

"One key thing I'm committed to is getting as many people as possible to discover what I've learned here," she said. She intends to organise local training sessions so other leaders can apply conflict transformation insights across different levels of the community.

"The one thing we have control over as peacemakers is the process."

We recently held a Peacemaking Training of Trainers week at the Sagana conference centre in Kenya, about two hours from Nairobi.

The group of senior Anglican participants were incredibly enthusiastic and open to learning.

During the week, they grasped a core principle of conflict transformation: while you cannot control the outcome of a dispute, you can shape the process, and help ensure a better outcome by using appropriate skills and tools.

A huge thank you to everyone who took part. We pray for each one as share their learning and insights with others back in their local communities, in parishes, deaneries and archdeaconries within the Mt Kenya region.

The Reconciling Mission programme equips churches in Britain to better engage with their local neighbourhoods and explore how to work in partnership with others in local communities to realise more of God’s realm.
