Coventry Street Pastors

Directions Website

Coventry Street Pastors Coventry Street Pastors is a Christian charity organisation. We are totally politically neutral. In the West Midlands there are now 20 SP Initiatives.

We don't evangelise; we seek to engage with people on the streets to care for them, listen to them and help them, whoever they are, whatever their backstory. Coventry Street Pastors Initiative has now been licensed by Ascension Trust (the governing charity based in London) having first sent their Development Manager to meet with Coventry Church representatives, Coventry Police & Council representatives, at a meeting held in Coventry Council offices on the 27th May 2015. A Street Pastor recruiting drive will now take place during September – December (presentations at Coventry Churches’ Sunday morning services) will endeavour to sign up 32 Street Pastor recruits to enable patrols (teams consisting of 4 x SPs) to take place every Friday and Saturday night around the City Centre pubs and clubs, once they have undergone their Ascension Trust training and attended their Commissioning Service (expected to be sometime in May 2016). The role of a Street Pastor is not about preaching, but one of caring, listening and helping - working in an unconditional way. People in Coventry will quickly (as they do in other towns and Cities) get to know that the Church is there for them in a practical way. Whether Street Pastors are pointing people in the right direction, persuading someone not to do something, providing emergency first aid, giving out flip-flops and lollies, or just being a shoulder to cry on, they practically demonstrate the Christian ethos of caring for one another.....not just to one another in their respective church congregations, but to the wider community – the Cities, Towns and villages where they live and work. Street Pastors is an inter-denominational Church response to urban problems, engaging with people on the streets to care, listen and dialogue. Street Pastors was started in 2003 by Rev Les Isaac OBE, Ascension Trust CEO, and is overseen and managed by Ascension Trust, registered charity no. 1127204. There are currently over 280 Street Pastor groups across the UK and worldwide, with over 13,000 Street Pastors operating on Britain’s streets. Volunteers are over 18 (there is no upper age limit), active church members and willing to complete a challenging programme of training including sessions on youth culture, drugs and knowing your community. A DBS check is required and references are obtained before SPs join a team of at least four people, each of whom will work a minimum of one night a month, usually on Fridays & Saturdays from 10pm to around 4am. A distinctive uniform is worn when on patrol and all are unpaid volunteers! Councils & Police forces across the UK have welcomed the development of Street Pastor teams which have contributed to a significant reduction in crime levels, sometimes dramatically. Week in and week out, Christians are demonstrating that they really do care about the local community in which they live. The govt’s initiative - THE BIG SOCIETY is something the churches across the UK have been doing for many, many years, whether through Drop In Centres for the homeless, Soup kitchens, Running Activities in church Community Centres or as now - STREET PASTORS. To provide maximum publicity and an opportunity to raise the profile of their recruiting drive, Coventry Street Pastors will hold a Launch Service on Monday 21st September 2015, commencing at 7.00pm at The Methodist Central Hall in Coventry. The Bishop of Coventry - The Right Reverend Dr Christopher Cocksworth has kindly agreed to be the patron of Coventry Street Pastors and will give an address at the Launch Service. Coventry Churches, Coventry City Councillors, including the Mayor have all been invited, along with key Council Officers responsible for the night time economy. This is what SPing is about.

We hope that OUR Christianity isn't broken.
Isaiah talks of food, of safety, of dignity, of an end to tears, humiliation and despair.
Jesus' ministry underpinned that hope for all people.
We are the only means through which Christ's example and Isaiah's hope can be made a reality. It's not always cosy and it's not always fluffy.

Let's never stop doing what we can, speaking when we should and challenging what we ought to.

Yesterday afternoon, Coventry Street Pastors Isabel and Alison encountered something you don't always see in Broadgate - an RAF Typhoon jet!
It's part of a three-day RAF show which finishes tomorrow, October 11th, brought to Coventry in recognition of the city's proud aviation history - the jet engines which power the Typhoon were pioneered by Coventry's own Sir Frank Whittle, and during the First World War, an airfield at Whitley served as an operational military base for the newly-formed Royal Flying Corps, now the RAF.
So there were TWO lots of blue uniforms in the city centre yesterday - but only one lot will still be there next week!

What an afternoon for Coventry Street Pastors Jayne (co-ordinator), Jain and Claire!
They introduced the Street Pastors initiative to Coventry University Freshers and then joined them in a walk.
This included visiting the city centre Boom Battle Bar, where everybody got to throw darts, and Coventry Transport Museum, where Claire and Jayne rode the Thrust SSC simulator. On, then, to Indulge coffee shop where the students became baristas and created fancy coffee-top pictures.
While there, the SPs spoke to a lovely elderly lady. She shared her life story, all about her family, and said that the SPs were the only people she had spoken to today.
The students continued on to another venue, Shenanigans, for a cocktail experience, where they and the SPs parted ways.

It's great that the students are aware of Street Pastors as soon as they arrive in the city - we welcome them all and wish them a safe and successful time at university!

And, being God/Christ on the streets, may Street Pastors everywhere be all of this to those they meet.

Well, the blazing summer days are definitely over and there is a touch of Autumn in the air in Coventry.
A new academic year means our Friday afternoon patrols have resumed, and our Friday and Saturday nights continue.
Get the heavier coats out, folks - stay warm as well as safe!

Posted by SCC on August 7th - but an affirmation for all Street Pastors, everywhere, always.

Today is Friday - when we share 'funnies' - but we couldn't let this comment go unnoticed, so we're starting the day with an affirmation of faith and a call to action!
GOOD morning!

Knife crime affects families, victims and entire communities. Choosing not to carry is the safest choice for everyone.

We’re working to help reduce knife crime across the city.

This week, we had a mobile surrender van known as FazAmnesty parked at Gosford Street car park, where bladed weapons could be deposited discreetly and safely. No questions asked. No personal details required.

If you didn’t make it to the van in the timeframe, you can still access your local surrender bins. You can find them outside Coventry Central Police Station, CV1 2JX which is accessible 24 hours a day or the junction of Grafton Street and Binley Road, CV3 1HZ.

For more advice visit the knife and weapons surrender arrangements link in the comments. If you need advice and guidance as a young person, you can visit the step together youth outreach link in the comments.

Not as warm a night promised as we've been having - ideal for tonight's Street Pastor team given the kit they will have with them!
We're hoping for peaceful and good-humoured nights for ALL teams out this weekend, wherever they are.

Coventry Street Pastors, like many other patrols, will be facing some gruelling weather this weekend - Friday's forecast temperatures will be challenging with SP equipment to be carried too, and Saturday's weather is forecast to be only a tiny bit cooler.

Please keep the teams in your thoughts and prayers, and if you're heading out during patrol times, stay hydrated, don't knock back too much alcohol (NOT a good idea in the heat), look after your friends and BE NICE to the Pastors you meet on the street!

Not QUITE the start of the month, but valid nevertheless.
God's got this.
God's got us.
Let's pass that on through all our interactions, on patrols and in our day-to-day: may our actions show that God is at work.
