We need to stop treating care as a “nice to have”. It’s a legal right.

Social care is the support we receive in a care home, our own home or the community to eat, to wash, to dress and to be able to see our friends and live as independently as possible. We will all need social care at some point either for ourselves or for a loved one.

In a rare cross-party coalition 12 years ago, Parliament created a law called the Care Act. The Care Act creates rights for all of us. The rights in the Act are basic. But the Care Act has never been funded properly.

Instead, past and current government funding settlements have left people without the essential care that they are legally entitled to. When we can’t access the care we need, lives are limited, families are stretched and inequalities deepen. We must not repeat past failures.

Future funding must leave none of us behind.

The Big Conversation on Care, initiated by the Casey Commission, is a nationwide consultation looking for your views on how to create a fairer future for adult social care.
