Sometimes a simple misunderstanding can lead to debt, unexpected payments or losing money through fraud. In this video, Mo from moneyPLUS shares real examples of Deaf clients who needed support understanding letters, dealing with HMRC, managing a car finance agreement and recovering money after an online purchase turned out to be fraudulent.

Having accessible advice can make it easier to understand what has happened, know what options are available and take the right next steps.

Mo works with Deaf people to build confidence around managing money, understanding income and expenditure, dealing with debt, and recognising the risks of financial abuse and fraud.

Since joining the service, Mo has supported hundreds of Deaf clients and also delivers money advice workshops, helping people gain the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their finances.

What happens when energyPLUS refers you to IncomeMax ?

The referral pathway is designed to make sure you understand what happens at each stage. With your consent, energyPLUS can refer you to IncomeMax, who will contact you for further information and complete a financial assessment.

Your assessment will then be explained to you, including how to make a claim, and you’ll be supported through the process. Once completed, your final income will be confirmed and followed up.

Being able to understand information in your own language, at your own pace, gives you the confidence to make informed decisions about your life. That’s why listening to the Deaf community and understanding what accessible communication looks like for different people is so important.

Join us for Part 3 of our Accessible Information Standard BSL Talk, with guest speaker Robin Ash from The Deaf Health Charity SignHealth . This session will focus on accessing healthcare, including hospitals, GPs, dentists and opticians, as well as what you can do when your communication needs are not being met.

Robin will explain your rights, the complaints process and how you can get support to ask for the access you need.
