Sketches of Dalston

Louis Netter and Roland Ramanan exhibit their respective drawings and photographs for the first time. Their pencils and lenses have been focused on Dalston and although they are using different mediums, both have managed to encapsulate something charged, emotive and dynamic from the streets. This exhibition plays photographs against drawings like a musical piece, punctuating each other and playing with different textures.

For over ten years, accomplished photographer Roland Ramanan was privileged to be allowed into the lives and homes of some of those he met, to photograph their fights and struggles; their families and their lovers. It is a unique and vibrant mosaic of the lives that float in and around a particular corner of Hackney in London’s East End.

Louis Netter has explored reportage drawing as an illustrator and academic for over 20 years. The textures and vitality of Ridley Road Market are a continual draw to his sense of visual adventure and quest to distil some essence of passing life. Drawing has a way of doing this in a perfectly imperfect way. For Netter, the market is a refutation of the banalising forces of modernity.
