Latin American Women's Aid supports Latin American & Global Majority women fleeing gender-based violence. Refuge, counselling, advice and community projects.

LAWA runs the only dedicated violence-against-women refuges for the vast Latin American community in the UK. We offer culturally sensitive and holistic services, that address the complex needs of women and children from a migration background. We welcome women of all abilities, from any cultural context, ethnicity, social class, religion and sexuality. We are proud to be bisexual, le***an, q***r a

nd trans women inclusive. LAWA is also the only provider within the community at the moment that provides services directly aimed at addressing the impact of domestic violence on children.

When people talk about domestic abuse, one question often comes up:
"Why doesn't she leave?"

What this question overlooks is the reality that many survivors face significant barriers when trying to escape abuse safely.

For migrant and Global Majority women, these barriers can include immigration insecurity, language barriers, financial dependence, lack of safe housing, isolation from support networks and fear of not being believed. These challenges can make leaving far more complex and dangerous than many people realise.

Instead of asking why a woman stayed, we should be asking what systems, barriers and inequalities made it harder for her to get to safety.

Creating a world free from violence against women and girls means addressing the conditions that keep survivors trapped, not judging the choices they make to survive.

Domestic abuse can take many forms, and for migrant women it often appears in ways that are harder to recognise and even harder to name. If you’ve ever felt unsure, unheard or unsafe, you deserve support that understands your lived experience and your rights.

If you need help, these services are available:
👉Domestic Violence Helpline: 0808 2000 247 (24/7) – you can ask for an interpreter.
👉Emergency: Call 999. Press 55 after calling to alert the police of an emergency. You can also ask for an interpreter by saying “Spanish” or “Portuguese”.
👉Risk of homelessness: Search your local authority + “homelessness support” for assistance.

When we talk about violence against women and girls, we must also talk about housing.

A survivor's ability to rebuild her life is often shaped by factors far beyond the abuse itself. Access to safe accommodation, appropriate support, financial stability and fair treatment within public systems all play a role in determining whether recovery is possible.

For migrant and Global Majority women, these challenges are often compounded by additional structural barriers. Recognising those realities is essential if we are serious about creating responses that work for all survivors.

At LAWA, our research and frontline experience continue to show that housing is not simply a welfare issue. It is a safety issue, a recovery issue and a justice issue.

Do you know what a trauma-informed approach is?

At LAWA, it is one of the principles that guides our work. A trauma-informed approach recognises that trauma can affect people in different ways and that these experiences may shape how someone engages with support.

Rather than focusing on "what's wrong with someone", it focuses on understanding what they may have experienced and creating environments centred on safety, trust and choice.
