[EN] Today the World Cup begins, bringing excitement and celebration.

But unfortunately statistics show that when football is on, incidents of domestic abuse increase. Behind the celebration, many women face a greater risk of harm.
Abuse is not part of the game.

If you need urgent support during this time:
✅ Domestic Violence Helpline: 0808 2000 247 (24/7). You can ask for an interpreter.
✅ Emergency: Call 999. If you press 55 after calling, that alerts the police of an emergency. You can also ask for an interpreter by saying Spanish or Portuguese.
✅ Risk of Homelessness: Search your local authority plus “homelessness support” for assistance.

[PT] A Copa do Mundo começa hoje, trazendo emoção e celebração.

Since our Homes for Healing report (2023), the situation has only become more urgent.

At the time, our WAHA (Women Against Homelessness and Abuse) report highlighted the deep links between housing, poverty and violence against women and girls, and the disproportionate impact on Black and minoritised women.

The data told a clear story:
👉 193 complex cases were supported through WAHA between 2020 and 2023.
👉 900 women accessed advice through the service.
👉 The majority of survivors were still facing housing instability even after support.

It also showed that many women experiencing homelessness remain invisible, moving between unsafe spaces, staying with family or friends, or remaining in abusive situations because they have nowhere else to go.

Three years on, these patterns have not improved. Survivors continue to face unsafe and unsuitable accommodation. Delays and poor practice from housing authorities remain common. Access to safe, stable and affordable housing is still one of the biggest challenges for the women we support.

WAHA, led by Latin American Women’s Aid (LAWA) in collaboration with the OYA Consortium including LAWA, London Black Women’s Project, Ashiana Network and Asha Projects, continues to bring evidence from frontline services into policy and advocacy spaces.

Our findings were a warning. Today, they feel more urgent than ever.

Being Latin American in the UK means carrying histories, languages, memories and resistance across borders. In a country where our communities are often overlooked, underestimated or push to invisibility, choosing to exist proudly in our accents, cultures and identities is also a political act.

We are part of this country’s classrooms, workplaces, movements, neighbourhoods and communities. We build homes far from home, create belonging in the middle of displacement, and continue shaping the UK with the strength, creativity and resilience that migration carries.

Wherever we are, we carry Latin America with us.

If this resonates with you, share this post and celebrate Latin American pride, community and belonging across the UK.
