Latin American Women's Aid supports Latin American & Global Majority women fleeing gender-based violence. Refuge, counselling, advice and community projects.

LAWA runs the only dedicated violence-against-women refuges for the vast Latin American community in the UK. We offer culturally sensitive and holistic services, that address the complex needs of women and children from a migration background. We welcome women of all abilities, from any cultural context, ethnicity, social class, religion and sexuality. We are proud to be bisexual, le***an, q***r and trans women inclusive. LAWA is also the only provider within the community at the moment that provides services directly aimed at addressing the impact of domestic violence on children.

As part of Latin American Heritage Month, which runs from 15 September to 15 October, we have been sharing words chosen by LAWA teams to reflect something of our experiences as Latin American women in the UK.

As we close “One Word, Many Stories”, Comunitaria feels like the right word to bring the campaign together. Our stories may be different, but community is what connects us, supports us and reminds us that we do not have to navigate our journeys alone.

A session of specialist support that understands domestic abuse, trauma, culture and migration, helping women rebuild their lives on their own terms.

How does it work? Donate £30 through LAWA’s Big Give campaign page during the campaign, and the match fund adds another £30.

Matching is available from midday on 6 October to midday on 13 October, while match funds last.

LAWA’s specialist counselling brings together an understanding of trauma, culture and migration, supporting Latin American and other Global Majority women to rebuild their lives on their own terms.

Bisexual women are still too often stereotyped, questioned or erased. Visibility matters because everyone deserves to have their identity recognised, respected and understood on their own terms.

Join our team as an LBTQ Outreach Volunteer and help us strengthen support for Latin American and Global Majority LBTQ+ women across London.

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in the VAWG sector, build outreach and community engagement skills, and contribute to ensuring more women can access the support they need.

➡Location: LAWA offices, Hackney, London
➡Commitment: 1 day per week (Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 5:30pm)
➡Minimum commitment: 6 consecutive months
➡Training and ongoing supervision provided

As a volunteer, you will support our LBTQ Project by:
✅Building connections with Latin American LGBTQ+ community spaces and organisations.
✅Supporting outreach activities and events.
✅Assisting with referrals and community engagement work.
✅ Helping increase awareness of specialist support available to LBTQ+ women.

Who can apply?
👉 Fluent in English and Spanish and/or Portuguese
👉 From a Latin American or Global Majority background
👉 Committed to women’s rights and social justice
👉 Empathetic, proactive and able to work with sensitive information

We particularly encourage applications from Black Latin American women and LBTQ+ women.

Applications close: 14 October 2026
Placement expected to start in November 2026

Today marks the beginning of Latin American Heritage Month, celebrated from 15 September to 15 October. To mark the occasion, we are launching "One Word, Many Stories", a campaign sharing words chosen by LAWA teams to reflect something of our experiences as Latin American women in the UK.

Today’s word is Raiz, roots in English:

“We learn to put down roots in a place that does not always welcome us, while holding on to the enduring roots of where we come from and who we are.”

Our roots travel with us. They are part of our languages, our memories, our communities and who we become.
