Children and Families Across Borders (CFAB) is a unique UK-based charity which protects children who have been separated from family members as a consequence of trafficking, abduction, migration, divorce, conflict and asylum. What we do:

CFAB is the only UK charity with an international children’s social work team and the only UK member of the International Social Service (ISS) network. We identify and protect the most vulnerable children who have been separated from their families in complex and often dangerous situations due to conflict, trafficking, migration, family break down or asylum-related issues. Working with partners in 130 countries, we are experts in social work in an international context, cross-border child protection cases, care proceedings requiring cross-border cooperation and overseas placements. As well as offering a wide range of case management services, we run a free national Advice Line to provide guidance and practical support on child protection issues.

International Kinship care allows children like Geanina to stay connected to who they are.

This , we asked our Expert By Experience, Geanina: Why is international Kinship Care so important?

This is what she told us.

"International kinship care matters because children don't stop belonging to their families, or their cultures, just because a border is in the way.

Being cared for by relatives helps children like myself stay connected to who they are.

Through my experience and my work as an Expert by Experience at CFAB, I've seen that decisions about where a child lives are also decisions about who they are."

Our CEO, Carolyn Housman, was honoured to speak at the National Kinship Ambassador Reception.

During the event, we found one recent global research finding particularly striking: only three countries surveyed could confirm they facilitated cross-border kinship care for all children.

With family networks increasingly existing across international borders, this gap matters.

Next week, CFAB is launching new research exploring what needs to change to better support children with family overseas.

But, whilst there is much to do in working towards a system change, we remain committed to supporting each individual child, one story at a time💙.

How are family connections for children in care prioritised in policy and practice?

Family for every child surveyed Kinship Care policies in 20 different countries across the world.

They found that kinship carers, and the children in their care, are frequently unrecognised in policies, unsupported in practice and uncounted in data.

But, through our upcoming research, CFAB is working to improve.

Next week we are launching our new research report at UK parliament.

CFAB has been working to improve data collection for children in the UK with family overseas.

We have been investigating whether local authorities across the UK are giving children with relatives overseas the same opportunity to remain within their family as children whose family live in the UK.

Next week, we'll be sharing our findings with key decision makers to improve awareness of children in care with family members overseas.

International kinship families remain invisible within our systems.

Data on international kinship carers is lacking across the globe. Without this data, these families cannot be adequately supported.

This , we are preparing our new research report to tackle this very issue.

Our report will look at how these families are being recognised within our UK systems. Because with proper recognition, international kinship families can continue to love and care for the children that need them.

Evidence matters.

Family for Every Child surveyed kinship care policies across 20 different countries. One thing they discovered is that national datasets are still missing key information on kinship carers.

So, at CFAB, we're improving this.

Our newest research looks into how international kinship care is being considered in the UK and will advise decision makers how to provide safe, stable, family options for all children in care.

1 in 4 children in the UK are born to a foreign-born mother. But are these children being given the same opportunity for kinship care?

The principles of Equity in Permanency state that family exploration should be prioritised for all children, helping to secure the best possible long-term outcomes for children's happiness and wellbeing.
