Children and Families Across Borders (CFAB) is a unique UK-based charity which protects children who have been separated from family members as a consequence of trafficking, abduction, migration, divorce, conflict and asylum. What we do:

CFAB is the only UK charity with an international children’s social work team and the only UK member of the International Social Service (ISS) network. We identi

fy and protect the most vulnerable children who have been separated from their families in complex and often dangerous situations due to conflict, trafficking, migration, family break down or asylum-related issues. Working with partners in 130 countries, we are experts in social work in an international context, cross-border child protection cases, care proceedings requiring cross-border cooperation and overseas placements. As well as offering a wide range of case management services, we run a free national Advice Line to provide guidance and practical support on child protection issues.

📖This week our outreach lead completed a life story book for one of the young people we support 📖

This project is part of our Life Story Work service, which is specifically designed to support unaccompanied asylum seeking children and young people across the UK.

A Life Story Work practitioner worked with the young person to create this book, facilitating a safe, compassionate, and culturally sensitive space in which to work through their trauma.

This creative process helps the children and young people we work with to understand the timeline of their lives, their origins, and their journey to the UK, supporting them to understand their identity and develop a sense of belonging.

Mariana Petersel, President of ISS Romania, has sadly passed away.

Throughout her life, Mariana made an extraordinary contribution to the welfare of children and families through her work with survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking, unaccompanied minors, asylum seekers, and other vulnerable children and individuals.

Mariana was a powerful human rights activist and will be remembered for the thousands of lives she touched through her work in Romania, across Eastern Europe, and beyond.

A valued colleague of the International Social Service network, Mariana leaves behind a remarkable legacy. We are deeply grateful for her immense contribution to the protection of children's rights and will continue to be inspired by her dedication, compassion, and commitment.

‼️Kinship children are missing out on the mental health support they urgently need‼️

According to Kinship's most recent annual survey, over 60% of Kinship carers say their children are not getting the mental health care that they need to support them with their trauma.

Refugee and asylum seeking children placed in kinship care in the UK have experienced immense challenges, including displacement, separation, and grief.

CFAB's Life Story Work Service is specifically designed to help refugee and asylum seeking children in kinship care to process their trauma and move towards a hopeful future 💛

Our condolences to the family and friends of Baron Herbert Laming, who sadly passed away on 15 July.

Lord Laming was one of the most influential social workers in British history. His work was instrumental in producing major changes in child protection policies in the UK, including the introduction of the Children Act in 2004.

We are grateful for Lord Laming's longstanding support for CFAB and for the enduring impact he has had in upholding children's rights as a member of the House of Lords and the Privy Council.

Lord Laming will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to safeguarding young lives, and his legacy will continue to shape child welfare for generations to come.

What do our intercountry caseworkers do?

Our caseworker, Anna, tells us: "The work is very broad and there are so many different types of enquiries. I answer enquiries on the phone and by email. It can take time to advise and signpost enquirers to the right place as every enquiry is very specific."

"Our team works on cases around the world every week, so it’s very normal to hear that your colleague has been speaking to authorities in Hong Kong and Germany and South Africa — we really do work far and wide."

"CFAB has such specialist knowledge that can’t be found anywhere else — that’s why it’s so important to call our Advice Line, so we can share the knowledge around!"

For social workers to practise their profession in countries where they are not registered is risky, unethical, and sometimes illegal.

But, with more children on the move than ever before, our social work profession must be able to work effectively on cross-border cases.

That's why we've created a factsheet for professionals outlining best practice for working overseas.

Local professionals are always the best placed to complete assessments in their own country. So, by respecting professional jurisdiction abroad and working in collaboration with local counterparts, we can continue to do the best for children and families through our social work practices.

Children should not lose family rights because borders exist.

But, for some children, the safest and most loving family option may not be nearby, it may be overseas.

CFAB welcomes Andy Burnham in his new role as Prime Minister and calls on his Government to ensure that international kinship care is recognised within their social care reform.

Without this action, children may continue to experience unnecessary separation from family, loss of culture and identity, and miss opportunities for permanent, long-term outcomes in their care.
