WONDER Foundation

WONDER Foundation Empowering women, girls and communities through education. We believe in empowering women, girls and communities through education.

Through our partners in the UK and overseas, we support health and education projects in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. We also provide opportunities for young women to engage more deeply with their communities, take responsibility and become skilled, active citizens. We believe that sustainable development of communities should ultimately come from within those same communities. Please find more info on our website.

This is why we do what we do. When a girl goes from “I’m not sure if I can” to determinedly doing it anyway, that’s what matters more than any number on a report 🧡

Today is International Day of the Midwife.

In the DRC, 1 in 183 women dies in childbirth in the DRC - compared to around 1 in 11,000 in the UK. The shortage of skilled midwives is felt every day.

For ten years, WONDER has worked alongside ISSI, the DRC’s leading nursing and midwifery training institution, to help change that.

Find out more about what WONDER and ISSI are doing to close the gap at the link in our bio.

At our Early Careers in Finance event with Ashmore, students and early career professionals had the chance to connect with experienced professionals, ask questions, receive CV feedback, do mock interviews, and gain honest advice.

Some of the advice that stuck:

✨ There’s more than one way to make change

✨ Don’t let the language intimidate you, there are many paths into finance

✨ Resilience is one of the best qualities you can bring

Thank you to everyone who made it such an inspiring morning! 💫

“If you want to be an authentic leader, especially driving change, people see whether or not your actions and words are aligned with your values” 💫

Tracy Tong Yu, “SHAPE” Program Lead at Merck Healthcare, brings it back to something fundamental: authentic leadership isn’t a style, it’s a standard.

In Episode 1 of “In Dialogue with WONDER”, Tracy shares how mentoring and education open pathways into critical industries like healthcare, and why women don’t just belong in these spaces, but shape outcomes at scale.

✨ In Dialogue with WONDER is our thought leadership series where influential voices from finance, business, and social impact demonstrate how investing in women’s education drives economic growth, strengthens communities, and delivers real ESG returns. These are the conversations shaping the future of responsible leadership.

Before a woman can move forward, she needs to know she is worth moving for.

In Boston, at EMPath’s Disrupting Poverty conference, we shared what we’ve learned from mentoring women across 24 countries, from London to Lagos to Manila.

Different contexts, different challenges, but the same question everywhere: does she know she matters?

Our latest blog explores how mentoring works across cultures, and why “I matter” is the starting point for lasting change.

“I found a community.” 🧡

When Raphaella first volunteered with WONDER, she was a young woman navigating life between cultures. Today, she’s our Chair, and her journey is at the heart of everything we do.

Diaspora communities have shaped WONDER from the very beginning. Their lived insight, cultural fluency and long-term commitment is what makes our work across 25 countries possible.

We’ve just published a new blog exploring how diaspora leadership shapes our global impact - from Nigeria to Guatemala to the Philippines.

✨ Testimonial Tuesday ✨

At just 19, Nohelia came to Junkacentro with little more than a dream. Living in Guatemala City’s Basurero community, she didn’t just want to survive — she wanted to grow.

“I saw this as an opportunity not only to improve financially but to grow as a person and learn how to be disciplined.”

Through the intensive nail technician course at Fundación Junkabal, Nohelia discovered just how capable she truly is.

“All the effort, patience, and dedication I put in — that’s what I’m most proud of.”

Now, she’s planning to start her own beauty business from home, shaping her future with purpose and pride.

“I used to think my future was only in the home. Now I have goals, I have dreams.”

Nohelia is one of 200 women receiving life-changing training, mentorship, and career support through our project at Fundación Junkabal — breaking the cycle of poverty with skills, confidence, and dignified work.

🌱 This is what empowerment looks like.
