Hackney Shed Hackney Shed is an Inclusive Theatre Company for young people aged 7-25 yrs and of mixed abilities.

The term inclusive reflects the desire to include all children no matter what their ability. We are an inclusive theatre company and our mission is to provide a vibrant, creative and informal atmosphere where members come together, share ideas and produce exciting theatre in an inclusive environment. The charity consciously seeks to engage and educate disadvantaged children and young people who oftentimes find it difficult to access arts activities.

Volunteer with our Young Archivists!

We’re looking for volunteers to support Shedlight: Young Voices Shining a Light on 25 Years of Inclusive History, our 25th anniversary project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Over the next year, our Young Archivists will uncover the stories, people and organisations that have shaped Hackney Shed and inclusive youth work across Hackney. Together, they’ll create a digital timeline and public exhibition celebrating 25 years of creativity, inclusion and community.

As a volunteer, you could:
- Explore archives and oral histories with young people
- Support research and help uncover untold stories
- Get involved in oral history interviews
- Help design and deliver the exhibition

You’ll be supported by our Archive Manager and Digital Archivist, with safeguarding training available if needed.

Be part of a lasting legacy while supporting the next generation of inclusive theatre-makers.

We’ve got exciting news!

Hackney Shed has been awarded funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for ‘Shedlight’ a two-year project celebrating 25 years of inclusive theatre and youth work in Hackney.

Led by young people, Shedlight will uncover the stories, memories and experiences that have shaped Hackney Shed and the wider history of inclusive youth work in our community.

Through archives, oral histories and creative storytelling, our Young Archivists will help create a digital timeline and exhibition, preserving these important stories for future generations.

Young Archivists Wanted!

Help uncover Hackney Shed’s hidden stories and shape its future.
As part of our 25th birthday celebrations, we’re looking for young people who are curious and creative to join our new group of Young Archivists. Whether you’re into history, theatre, art, design, interviewing or simply asking great questions, this project is for you.
If you’re already a Hackney Shed member, we’re welcoming young people aged 9-25. If you’re new to Hackney Shed, we’re looking for young people aged 16-25 to join the project.
Over the course of a year, you’ll explore Hackney Shed’s archives, record oral histories, uncover untold stories and help create a digital timeline celebrating 25 years of inclusion, creativity and community. You’ll also co-create a public exhibition at Hackney Archives, sharing these stories with the wider community.
Everything you discover will inspire a second year of creative projects and performances, helping to shape the next chapter of Hackney Shed.

WHO ARE HACKNEY SHED?
Hackney Shed is an inclusive performing arts group for young people established in 2001 with the support of Chickenshed.

Hackney Shed seeks to advance appreciation of and participation in the performing arts, and to develop social inclusion skills and community cohesion, particularly for the benefit of children and young people in Hackney and surrounding areas.

Hackney Shed is recruiting for a Digital & Oral History Archivist

1 day a week in Year 1, 1 day a month in Year 2
£250/day with 2% inflation in year 2

Hackney Shed are seeking a proactive and passionate individual to join our team as a Digital and Oral History Archivist.

This is an exciting and creative role, ideal for someone looking for flexible, part-time work to complement their existing commitments.

We are looking for someone with strong digital and archival skills, including experience in digital preservation, cataloguing, and managing digital assets, as well as oral history collection.

You will lead on creating an accessible digital timeline and developing sustainable approaches to preserving and sharing archival material, while working closely with our archive manager, team and young people.

This role is perfect for someone with excellent attention to detail and a commitment, or proven interest, to inclusive practice, particularly supporting disabled and neurodivergent young people and those from under-represented backgrounds.

Join us in supporting young people through creative, inclusive arts programming.

The deadline for applications is:  10am Mon 22nd June 2026

Interview dates: 3rd July in Hackney (please let us know if you cannot make one of these dates. We will do our best to accommodate you, but cannot guarantee this)

Since January, CT & YT have been generating ideas, devising, designing and rehearsing their new show, and it is nearly time to share the results with you!

CT presents... The Greatest Fun Fair in the World
In the year 2100 Hackney is buzzing as a new robot-run fun fair, promising the greatest day out, prepares to open. Excited crowds gather for the grand opening ceremony, but things seem a little off...

YT presents... Universal Space Cruise
Welcome aboard Universal Space Cruise, the galaxy’s most luxurious holiday experience. But as the ship travels deeper into space, some passengers notice strange things happening onboard. Why are the aliens so determined to keep everyone drinking water?

This is a double bill of two separate shows inspired by the same topics both set in the year 2100.
