Meet our trainees! šŸ‘‹ Steph’s seen the impact of poor mental health and wants to become the support she knows is needed.

With a degree in musical theatre and a previous veterinary career, her creative and caring nature is sure to serve her well as a mental health social worker.

Mental health support can take many forms, and should wrap around a person’s life in a way that is meaningful for them.

This includes supporting people to speak up for themselves, build confidence, and access the help they need

šŸ—£ļø ā€œI’m excited not just to help the people I’ll be working with, but also to learn from them, and learn about myself.ā€

Meet our trainees! šŸ‘‹ Talib changed careers from teaching to mental health social work and is enjoying being a learner again.

From his time working in education, he saw mental health support first‑hand and recognised the need for more resources and better training.

He recognises that mental health support goes beyond clinical treatment and includes practical help tailored to people’s needs:

• Community groups that do colouring
• Support with navigating housing and benefit systems
• Help finding meaningful employment
• Active listening and advocating for people’s rights to be protected

Talib’s teaching background brings lots of transferrable skills as a mental health social worker – skills he’s excited to develop.

šŸ—£ļø ā€œI think I’ll become better skilled and better equipped but also potentially even a better person.ā€

We’re with you all the way Talib!

šŸ’š Mental Health Awareness Week is taking place this week šŸ’š

This year’s theme, Action, is a call to turn understanding into momentum.

We know more than ever about what supports good mental health - connection, stability, community, and fair access to support. But knowing isn’t enough. This week is a reminder that positive change comes from what we do together.

Let’s use this week to spark conversations, support each other, and commit to the steps that make lasting change possible.

Awareness matters. Action turns it into progress. šŸ’š

Mental health social workers are not an ā€˜optional extra’.

Our new briefing highlights their impact:

šŸ‘‰Helping people break cycles of crisis and repeat hospital admissions

šŸ‘‰Strengthening multidisciplinary teams

šŸ‘‰Improving discharge, coordination and system efficiency

šŸ‘‰ Preventing escalation into high-cost, high-intensity services.

Yet they remain a small proportion of the mental workforce. Only 1 in 3 people with severe mental illness currently has access to a mental health social worker.

If we are serious about prevention and tackling inequalities, this must change.

What makes mental health social workers unique?

Our recent briefing highlights the distinctive blend of skills, values and perspectives that mental health social workers bring to mental health teams.

✨Addressing the social determinants of mental health

✨Strengths and rights-based practice

✨Deep legal literacy and safeguarding expertise

✨Relationship-based preventative support

✨Bridging health, social care, housing and justice systems

Mental health social workers don’t replace clinical care - they help make it work better.
By keeping the whole person in view, not just their symptoms, they strengthen support and help services join up around what really matters in someone’s life.

Happy Vaisakhi to all who are celebrating in our community.

Social circumstances and mental health are closely intertwined- for many people, you can’t effectively address one without dealing with the other.

When someone is experiencing mental health difficulties, the support of a mental health social worker can be transformative.

They help people navigate the practical challenges that can have a profound impact on their well-being, such as employment issues, unstable housing, or strained relationships.

That’s why we’re calling on the government to ensure everyone with a severe mental health condition can access this vital support by including mental health social workers in the upcoming NHS workforce plan.
