Veterans Aid (VA) is a UK charity, which is dedicated to providing immediate, practical and holistic support to veterans who are homeless, facing homelessness or in crisis, regardless of age, ethnicity, rank, gender, orientation or length of service. Its aim is to emotionally, socially and financially empower veterans to sustain independent living - and has been doing so since 1932.

On the last day of his visit to Tbilisi, CEO of Veterans Aid Professor Hugh Milroy, reviewed his week of talks with members of the Georgia Veterans Federation and reaffirmed his commitment to promoting universal wellbeing for the ex-service community.

In a final meeting at GVF HQ, not far from the Georgian capital’s Freedom Square, he reflected on exchanges with staff at the British Embassy, representatives of the Peace Forum and the many individuals who made his visit so valuable and memorable. He said, “I was humbled by the warmth of my welcome and the reminder that wherever they are in the world, veterans share a common love for their country and respect for their colleagues and counterparts.”

The universality of the veteran experience was high on in the agenda in Tbilisi this week when Veterans Aid CEO Professor Hugh Milroy met ex-servicemen and women from a variety of the country’s veterans’ groups. ‘Regardless of where they are from, or what language they speak, veterans and their families want the same things as everyone else” he told his audience. “They want to live with dignity, security and independence, in a society that respects their contribution and does all it can to ensure their wellbeing."

In the garden of a private house in Tbilisi, an unusual memorial to British veterans can be found. In a visit brokered by staff from the British Embassy, CEO of Veterans Aid, Professor Hugh Milroy, was allowed a rare glimpse of this almost forgotten tribute to British servicemen who lost their lives in Georgia. He was joined by his host, Mr Michael Tsikaridze, Acting President of the Georgia Veterans Federation (left) and Georgian Knight of Chokha and Board Chairman, Mr. Zaal Simharulize (right).

Memorial at Heroes Square, Tbilisi - CEO of Veterans Aid Professor Hugh Milroy, who is visiting Georgia as a guest of the Georgian Veterans Federation, joined other veterans at the capital’s famous memorial to salute those who gave their lives for their country. Participants were blessed and thanked for their attendance before moving on to an informal meeting of the Peace Forum and other Georgian veterans organisations.

Photo 1: CEO of Veterans Aid, Professor Hugh Milroy, who is presently in Tbilisi as a guest of the Georgia Veterans Federation, spent the first day of his visit meeting members of the GVF, its partner organisations and the Georgian Veterans Ombudsman, Giorgi Tevzadze.

During his four day visit Professor Milroy will be meeting members of the wider Georgian veterans community and sharing his expertise on best practice regarding veterans wellbeing.

The visit, hosted by the GVA, further cements VA’s position as a charity with international reach and impact.

‘We may speak different languages,’ said Prof Milroy, ‘but we have much in common and I was honoured to accept Mike’s invitation to meet and share perspectives on the post-service wellbeing issues that unite us.’
