We are delighted to announce Dr Aakeen Parikh FRSA has won the Royal Academy Young Engineer of the year award.

As Research Manager for Vehicle Futures Hub, Imperial College London, Dr Aakeen leads collaborative research projects that are helping to drive the UK's transition to cleaner, more sustainable transport.

A recipient of the 2023 RSA Catalyst Award, Dr Aakeen is passionate about developing innovative solutions to address global challenges, including climate change and social injustice. This passion is reflected in her work with The Minazi Impact, where she leads the development of environmentally sustainable solutions to advance women's health and wellbeing.

She also leads the Sanitary Pad Project in Rwanda, collaborating with Dufatanye Organisation, to produce reusable sanitary pads from local waste resources.

As football takes centre stage this summer, we're looking back more than 130 years to a story from the RSA archive.

In February 1893, inventor Arthur Paget visited the RSA to demonstrate his new warp weaving and knitting machine. To showcase its capabilities, he exhibited garments made using the technology, including football jerseys in striped and zig-zag designs.

At the time, the England men’s national football team had already been playing international matches for more than 20 years, having first played in 1872.
