This Volunteers' Week, please donate to help provide our volunteers all the necessary training, safeguarding, and logistical support they need to teach in prisons.

Fine Cell Work would not be operating today in over 30 prisons today without its volunteers.

We get immense support from skilled volunteers who not only go into prison to teach our stitchers, but also support with design development and production, mentoring and guidance, sales and events, opening up their homes and communities for us, delivering talks, and spreading awareness. We're so grateful for all of their contributions 🙏.

If you’ve enjoyed hearing about our amazing volunteers and the work they do this , then why not join us?

Fine Cell Work are looking for prison-based volunteers in Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire, Buckinghamshire and Cambridgeshire.

Our prison-based volunteers are on the frontline of our work and visit prisons on a fortnightly basis to teach stitchers.

These volunteer roles are suited to a patient, non-judgemental person with a good level of needlework skills (or a willingness to learn!), who has prior experience in teaching or working with socially-excluded groups. If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.

Meet Lucilla 🤝!

To continue our celebrations, we caught up with volunteer Lucilla.

Lucilla is a retired teacher who generously volunteers her time, expertise and skill to Fine Cell Work. She teaches needlework in prison, and enjoys seeing stitchers build their confidence to the point in which they become the teachers!

These stitcher quotes, taken from this year's stitcher survey, illustrate just how amazing our volunteers are 🌟.

Our volunteers teach fine needlework skills, but the work they goes way beyond this. They create a space in which stitchers can feel a sense of calm and build relationships with others, which, in turn has a profoundly positive impact on stitchers' mental health.

We simply could not do what we do without our volunteers, so once again, alongside our stitchers, we want to thank them for everything they do 🙏.

Meet Marion 🤝!

Volunteers' Week, running from 1st to 6th June, celebrates the amazing contributions volunteers make to communities across the UK. It's a chance to recognise, celebrate and thank the UK's incredible volunteers for all they contribute to our local communities, the voluntary sector, and society as a whole.

Volunteers are essential for Fine Cell Work, and are on the front line of our programmes, delivering our services both inside and outside of prisons. To mark Volunteers' Week, we spoke to some of the amazing individuals who give their time and energy to help deliver our services. First up is Marion Bedford, who volunteers for us in the South West.

Happy ⭐️!

Volunteers are an essential part of Fine Cell Work, supporting our work in a variety of roles across the charity. The amount of volunteers we work with continues to steadily grow, and we are so grateful for the amount of dedication and commitment shown by each and every one of them.

Last year, our volunteers dedicated a staggering 2350 hours to working with us, with many of them of taking on more than one volunteering opportunity. Our volunteers stay with us too - on average around 5 years; some for 10 years or more.

Throughout the week, we will be sharing more about our volunteers and celebrating the amazing work they do!

Recently, our Open the Gate apprentices, volunteers and staff had the wonderful opportunity to visit Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style at the King's Gallery, Buckingham Palace 👑.

The visit felt especially timely, coming shortly after Fine Cell Work was honoured to receive a Royal Warrant. We also had the opportunity to take part in a cape designing workshop after the tour.

Access to shared cultural spaces and community experiences like this plays an important role in rehabilitation, helping people build confidence, connection and a sense of belonging. A huge thank you to the Royal Collection Trust for hosting us and providing a private viewing of this remarkable exhibition. One apprentice said:

“Visiting such a prestigious exhibition was truly inspiring. I’ve recently got my own sewing machine, and it has given me plenty of ideas and motivation for future projects.”

We are thrilled to announce that BCL Solicitors LLP have chosen Fine Cell Work as their Charity of the Year for 2026 🌟

Throughout the year they will support us by organising fundraising initiatives, awareness campaigns, charitable donations, and volunteering.

To kick things off, they recently organised a Charity Football Tournament, with all the proceeds going to Fine Cell Work. Lindsay Murphy, our Director of Programmes, attended the match and could feel the energy in the air:

"It was a real privilege to be associated with such a fantastic fundraiser. It was so well organised and so well attended. Thanks to every single person who came out on the hottest day of the year to make it great."

We are immensely grateful and appreciate BCL Solicitors LLP's generous support for rehabilitation work 🙏

Conjuring up long summer days in Mediterranean gardens, the limited edition Terracotta Pot Hand-Embroidered Cushion is the newest design to emerge from our women's workshop.

The design was developed in-house so that the women could showcase their hand-embroidery skills, learn about design and use their machining skills to neatly appliqué and make up the cushions.

In creating this strictly limited edition run, each of the women made at least one cushion, including the newest stitcher to join the workshop, who has just passed her induction - it was a wonderful group effort 🌟.

We've just a handful of these cushions in stock, so shop now, while you can!
