Our latest newsletter is out now - with a lead story about Hackney's
Black History Season.

Hackney launches its Black History Season programme on Saturday 3 October.

This year’s programme features an exciting lineup of cultural events. Links to some of the programme highlights are below.

*1926 meets 2026
Head to Chats Palace for a cabaret celebrating Black British Lindy Hop and jazz.
4 October, 4pm-9pm. Read more

*60 years of Carnival
This exhibition celebrates the Notting Hill Carnival through Tropical Isles’ carnival journey.
From 7 October.

*Deaf Black Friendly Hub celebration
Join Deaf Black Friendly Hub for an inclusive, family-friendly Black History Month celebration.
10 October, 1.30pm-8.30pm.

Hackney’s Black History Season runs from October to November. If you are hosting an event in Hackney that celebrates Black history or culture, complete an online form for events to appear on the Love Hackney website.

What a great morning at our Woodberry Wetlands Neighbourhood Forum, in collaboration with the wonderful Friends of Woodberry Down! 💛💛

Led by the Neighbourhood facilitator Finn from Redmond Community Centre, the focus was on improving access to Type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes support, with 45 residents participating.

We were delighted to welcome Veselina, Diabetes Educator from Hackney Diabetes Centre, who shared information about the support available. We then had a productive discussion in groups about what support residents would like to see in the community, and how the journey to the Diabetes Centre could be more manageable - with plenty of valuable insights and ideas to take forward! 💡

Afterwards, Veselina was given a mini-tour of Woodberry Down and the Redmond Centre 😊

A brilliant morning of local voices, useful conversations and partnership working with some music, dancing and dominoes too! 🙌

Our latest newsletter is out now - with a lead story about an open day at Centre 151 happening this Sunday.

Centre 151 is inviting the local community to join them at its open day. Visitors to the centre can enjoy performances, homemade food, crafts, or relax in the garden.

The open day features a lively celebration of community and Vietnamese culture.

Activities include Qigong, Tai Chi and line dancing, alongside performances from a range of contemporary dancers and musicians.

Family-friendly workshops will run throughout the day. Visitors will also get the chance to experience therapies such as Thai massage, Shiatsu, acupuncture, Reiki and aromatherapy massage.

When: Sunday 27 September, 10am-4pm.

In this week's newsletter, we profile an inspiring short film to be shown at the next Morland Estate Film Club event.

The film, Idia's Friends on the Street, highlights the work of Aina, who founded Idia's Community Kitchen in memory of her daughter, Idia.

Idia's Community Kitchen is a Hackney charity providing free food to vulnerable people. Its aim is to reduce food waste and tackle poverty in the community.

This moving documentary follows Aina's journey and the community that has grown around the kitchen, exploring food insecurity, grief, volunteering and the ways people support each other.

The Morland Estate Film Club will screen the film as part of this month's film showcase. This will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

Help shape the future of support for Hackney’s voluntary and community sector!

Join one of three September workshops to share your needs and co-create future infrastructure funding.

Following Hackney Council’s grants redesign last year, the council is taking the next step in evolving how it funds and supports the local voluntary and community sector (VCS) infrastructure.

The council is inviting local VCS organisations to join them at one of their events this September.

These events will reflect on recent learning, share your current needs and help co-design a brand-new VCS Infrastructure support package launching in 2027.

Key discussion topics include:
Strengthening organisations.
Networks and forums.
Volunteering.

The first session will be co-hosted by Badu and Grassroots for Good.
They will share valuable insights from the Black and Global Majority infrastructure programme, exploring how it successfully evolved from a traditional grant model into a strategic partnership supporting Hackney.

Events:
Tuesday 15 September, 2-4pm. Online.
Friday 18 September, 10am-12pm. Online.
Wednesday 23 September, 2-4pm. Jack Dunning Community Hall.

Organisations with an annual income of under £250,000 may be eligible to apply for Collaboration and Co-Production funding to support their participation in the workshops.
