Tomorrow we celebrate and remember the lives of three young people from Irish families all from our parish, all died far too young they were all in the same hospital at the same time. They all died from Brain Tumours, our daughter Sue died after a short 6 week illness she was 42 and left 2 young children, 5 months later Anthony Bourke died aged 34 and 2 years later after a long battle Jackie McGovern died aged 42. At our Irish Charity Night we will remember them and raise urgently needs funds for Brain Tumor Research.

Today’s news from the NHS marks a major leap forward for brain cancer patients and their families.

A new rapid genomic test - now being rolled out across specialist NHS centres in England - can slash brain tumour diagnosis times from up to eight weeks down to just two hours.

For patients and families facing a suspected brain tumour, waiting weeks for answers is agonizing. Getting results in hours or days means:

✅ Surgical teams can tailor treatment plans while an operation is still underway.
✅ Patients gain faster access to targeted chemotherapies and vital clinical trials.
✅ Families receive clarity when every single day counts.

At In Sue’s Name, we know that research saves lives. Despite brain cancer killing more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer in the UK, research into this disease has historically been drastically underfunded. Breakthroughs like this rapid test show exactly why sustainable funding for research is so critical - and what is possible when precision medicine gets the backing it deserves.

We remain passionately committed to raising £1 million by 2027 to fund world-class research at the Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence at Queen Mary University of London (Blizard Institute).

61 years ago my lovely Irish wife Kathleen made me the happiest man in the world when she agreed to become my partner in life and love. She has been the rock on which our family was founded, 4 children, 6 grandchildren and one greatgrandchild later she has seen us through the loss of our beautiful eldest daughter Sue and other misfortunes, but her strength has ensured that we have the wonderful family we are today. God bless you my love and hopefully we may have more years together to see our family grow

Please come and join us in a wonderful night of Irish music and dancing on Friday 2nd October at the Penridge Suite with music from the Barry Owen group and dancers from the Trainor school of Irish Dancing. This event is raising funds for Brain Tumour Research in memory of 3 young people from the St Monicas Parish in Palmers Green who were all from Irish families and were in the same hospital at the same time and all died from Brain Tumours. Stories like Joey’s are the reason we push so hard for progress in brain tumour research.

Diagnosed with a brain tumour at just 11 days old, Joey faced immense hurdles right from the very start of his life. Today, seeing him hit such a huge milestone - starting school - is an incredible testament to his strength, his family’s resilience, and the critical importance of continued medical research.

While we celebrate this amazing milestone for Joey and his family, his journey is a powerful reminder of why funding research into brain tumours remains vital.

Every child deserves the chance to reach their first day of school and beyond.

This is exciting news from our partners at Brain Tumour Research

Researchers at the Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence at the University of Nottingham have identified two existing drugs which could target glioblastoma.

Their findings suggest nilotinib (used to treat leukaemia) and darifenacin (used to treat overactive bladder) are worth investigating further for treating the brain tumour type.

Drug repurposing like this can accelerate the development of new treatments by building on medicines that have already undergone testing, reducing the number of steps involved in a clinical trial.

Dr Phoebe McCrorie, who led the study, said: “While there is still a great deal of work to do, these findings provide a valuable starting point for developing more targeted approaches against glioblastoma recurrence.”

There has not been a new glioblastoma treatment approved in over 20 years. Only 4% of patients survive for five years or more after diagnosis.
