We were at the TLC Low-cost therapies clinic with Laura van Tatenhove offering Bowen Therapy and Becky Jane Dallender offering Reiki this morning with 8 people booked in who would otherwise have not had access to support. If you’re a complementary therapist and would like to join us in volunteering your time once a month please get in touch. We look forward to welcoming you to the team. ♥️ (we asked our friend Fatima to be in the picture just cos she’s cooler than us!)

"It's not possible to be in favour of justice for some people and not be in favour of justice for all people" Martin Luther King

I saw this plaque on a bench in the cemetery yesterday and it just seemed to resonate with how I'm feeling at the moment. It's been difficult to re-engage with life as was after such a big trauma as witnessing my country being bombed for no reason. And I'm really feeling into all the ways our media (and social media) are constantly trying to misinform and divide us, to create separation between us all, to pit us against each other and scapegoat the most vulnerable people in our communities.

One thing I know for sure is that our struggles for liberation are linked and the only way we're going to make it through this most difficult period is through solidarity, compassion and collective action.

If you find yourself making blanket judgements about another group of people ask yourself where you got that idea from. Ask yourself if what you believe is true. bell hooks advocated for love as a political force and said that the reason we often fail at love is because we see it as an emotion instead of a verb. In that vain, if you find yourself 'othering' a group of people, always ask yourself, - what would love do? ❤

(RIP John Craig Tonwnley Dean who I didn't know but feel connected to now).

I first met this lovely woman in a field in Somerset around 25 years ago - we were at an intercultural summer school called the Tribe of Doris, and singing together in a workshop. We met every year before the summer school changed sites and lost touch. During lockdown I got in touch with Kath and asked if she'd be willing to run some Qigong workshops for us online, which she did and we've been meeting online every week since then. The classes have been so amazing and if you haven't tried Qigong I really recommend you do.

For one, Kath is an incredible human and so knowledgeable. Just being in her presence makes you feel calm, and the gentle way she encourages us towards correct posture makes everything feel achievable. I've attended through injury and pain and stress and I can tell you I wouldn't have had the resilience I have if it wasn't for these classes and for Kath's direction.

If you're looking for something to do on a Monday night for half an hour that will keep you mobile, be good for your joints and your stamina, be gentle enough if you have injuries, and help reduce a sense of overwhelm you might be feeling then I really encourage you to join us online one Monday. Have a look on our website for more information and taster videos you can try out. I know you won't regret it. ❤

SUNDAY 8 FEB 1-4pm at the Tara Centre, Lancaster
Do you sometimes feel like you want to speak your truth but hold yourself back? Do you wish you could communicate clearly when your boundaries have been crossed? Do you find it difficult to meditate but have a yearning to find a deeper connection to yourself and your purpose? One thing that could support you with all of this is to learn to use your voice as a healing tool in a safe and supportive environment with a skilled facilitator - and by using your voice we don't mean learning to sing in the traditional sense.

We believe it is your birth right to use your voice and that your voice holds your own unique sonic fingerprint in the world. In this session Jayson will guide you to use your voice through humming and toning (making a sustained sound of a vowel) - the aim isn't to sing but to bring sound into your physical and energy body, to connect with the sacred through sound and silence.

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM THIS SESSION
- a sense of calm and peace
- feeling connected and at home in your body, more like yourself
- an enhanced sense of wellbeing and vitality
- techniques you can take away and practice at home

PLUS Jayson will offer you a unique Vocal Sound Bath like you've never experienced before ... a comfortable, deep space of relaxation and healing.

Adam came to the Tara Centre 9 years ago to begin his practice of Zen meditation with Jitei, and after many years of consistent practice, he was invited by Jitei to train as a Meditation teacher. Adam is a martial arts practitioner and teacher and is one of the founders of the Kaizen Academy in Lancaster, bringing his teaching skills and disciplined practice to his path as a Zen practitioner and teacher. His Friday sessions have grown to be a beautiful community which I feel as an anchor to the Tara Centre, in the same way as Jitei's sessions on Wednesdays.

If you're reading this and wondering whether the class might be a right fit for you, read on. Classes are on Fridays 3.30-4.30pm at the Tara Centre, The Storey, Lancaster and are offered by donation (£7.50 / £5 / £3 / £1) payable on the day or online.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION
+ 25 minutes of silent meditation
+ 5 minutes of walking meditation (stepping slowly in silence in circle inside)
+ another short period of seated meditation.
We usually finish the hour long class with a cup of tea and time for reflection, integration and conversation.
Instruction will be given to those who are new to the group, and we may cover Loving Kindness, Mindfulness, breath, posture, exploring distractions, or Somatic Meditation.

Whether you're new or an experienced meditator, you'll find the support of the group will really boost your practice, and Adam will offer guidance and advice when needed.

WHO THESE SESSIONS ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR
+ If you're currently experiencing an acute situation (such as constant flashbacks, severe anxiety, psychosis) periods of silence or reflection may exacerbate your situation and wouldn't be recommended for you at this time, especially in a group situation.

HOW TO BOOK
You can contact Adam on 07908 286 717 to book your place or book via our website (link in comments).

Any questions please ask.

PS also is this photo you'll see Mark who's probably been coming to meditation regularly for as long as Adam and whose mum Shirley was one of Jitei's first students many moons ago and a beloved member of the sangha.

For the past 11 and a half years Jitei has been at the Tara Centre every Wednesday evening 7.30-9.30pm teaching Buddhist meditation. Whilst the content and format of these sessions has changed over the years, and several hundreds of people have come and gone, there is a solid core to the sangha who sit together with such commitment, love and dedication you rarely see.

Whilst secular approaches to meditation focus on mental health, Buddhist meditation teaches a path to enlightenment. Every week there is silent meditation, chanting, dharma talk, tea and an opportunity to ask questions.

Jitei has a new website which explains his point of view so beautifully - please do have a look when you have time (link in comments). Here's an excerpt:

Begin Where You Are.

Sit Down.

Be Still.

This is the start of something real. It doesn’t promise to fix you but it teaches you how to stay with what’s already here.

This is real Zen. It’s hard and yet so simple. You don’t have to prove yourself, just show up.

What's asked of you

A willingness to show up daily to your life, even in small ways.

A commitment to sit zazen every day.

An interest in turning toward your life, rather than away from it.

A respect for silence and simplicity.

It is time to shed the performance of being a “seeker” and to take up a daily lived simplicity.
