Did you know there are whopping 1,450 species of hawk-moth across the globe? Here in the UK they are some of our largest and most easily recognised moths.

3๏ธโƒฃ hawk-moth species you might spot are:

Elephant hawk-moths with their flashy golden-olive and pink colouring. Their name comes from the caterpillars, which look (kinda) like an elephant's trunk... with eyes ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘€

Poplar hawk-moths, who look like large crinkly leaves ๐Ÿ‚ Don't bother buying them flowers as they're attracted to light instead ๐Ÿ’ก

Hummingbird hawk-moths come over from southern Europe to enjoy a UK summer (that doesn't make sense to us either ๐Ÿค”). They are also technically the only 'hummingbird' in Europe!

Have you seen one of these majestic moths?

Join our Red Squirrel Recovery Network (RSRN) Project Assistant, Ella, as she takes us through ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘œ (some items might surprise you ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŸ)

Ella works with communities across Cumbria to spread the word about these much-loved little mammals and how we can protect them, and she's particularly looking to work with young people. She also works out in the field, checking on red squirrel and pine marten populations ๐ŸŒฒ

Pine martens are predators that help to keep grey squirrels in check, which is good for reds as the two species can't coexist โ›” Greys are bigger, slower and haven't evolved suitable anti-predator behaviours like reds squirrels have because they're non-native.

To join a red squirrel group or report sightings ๐Ÿ‘‡

P.S. who else agrees that our next video with Ella should be how to felt a red squirrel onto a jumper?? ๐Ÿ˜

Did you know that the sandstone cliffs of our very own St Bees Head are home to the only breeding black guillemots in England? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Distinguishable from common guillemots by their vivid red feet, black guillemots aren't as social and tend to be seen in pairs or small groups. Now's the best time to see them nesting in their striking black summer plumage.

Have you been to see them at St Bees? ๐Ÿ‘€

Today is and this small but mighty bird definitely deserves to be celebrated!

Despite weighing about the same as 2 AA batteries, common swifts migrate between Africa and the UK every year. That's over 6000 miles, each way ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Not only do they travel extremely far, they are also incredibly speedy. The name 'swift' is well deserved as they've been recorded reaching 69mph โ€“ the fastest confirmed level flight speed of any bird! ๐Ÿ†

To top off the speed records and long migrations, they do almost everything on the wing, only landing to nest. Eating, sleeping and mating are all done in flight (impressive!).

Where have you seen swifts this year? ๐Ÿ‘€
