I wasn't always talking about resilience.
There was a time when I wasn't talking about recovery.
I was trying desperately to find it.
I'd spent time in the Parachute Regiment, followed by years as a firefighter with Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service.
I'd seen things that stay with you.
I'd experienced childhood trauma, military loss and the cumulative impact of years of emergency service.
Eventually, I was medically retired with Complex PTSD.
And I honestly didn't know what life was going to look like after that.
When I was poorly, I needed to see something I wasn't seeing enough of:
People who had been through terrible things and got better.
Not people pretending everything was fine.
Not people telling me to simply think positive.
People who had actually walked through the darkness and found their way out.
That's part of why I created The Resilience Gathering.
I share my story not because I think my journey is special.
I share it because if I've found a way forward, perhaps someone else can begin to believe that they can too.
I don't tell my story so you believe in me.
I tell my story so you'll begin to believe in yourself.
Eight weeks from today, we'll be bringing together a group of speakers with very different stories, but one thing in common:
They've all faced adversity.
And they've all found a way forward.
