On 1st June Members discussed the future of the Club at their meeting at Stonecross Manor Hotel. The meeting, chaired by President Martin French, talked about a number of options.
It was generally agreed that we want the Club to continue, but perhaps with a different format of meetings. We also wanted to continue our attempts to attract new members.
Decisions will be made at next Monday’s meeting, at the Club Assembly.

Kendal Rotary welcomed Philip Burley as speaker on 18th May. He took us back through the history of puzzles, and broke them down into categories. We didn’t attempt the Tower of Hanoi (we’d still have been there) and had no idea why a brandy glass is that shape (😉 we know now!). Some sussed the assassin’s teapot and we now know the difference between a maze and a labyrinth. We heard how Betsy Ross, a seamstress, showed George Washington how to create a star shape to adorn the American flag and that folding a map can have infinite possibilities. Each table had a “box of tricks” to round off a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting talk.

Join Stricklandgate House for a conversation with Lee Child, famous author of the Jack Reacher series, as he takes us on a journey from redundancy to bestselling author.

Lee Child is helping raise funds for the Stricklandgate House 4 Sustainable Heritage Project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The project will transform our much loved Georgian building into an accessible Heritage and Community Hub, protecting 250 years of history while supporting the charities and community services that serve Kendal today.

Refreshments including cheese and wine, have been kindly provided by the Kendal Farmers Market, showcasing what our local area has to offer!

The speaker on 11th May was one of our own members, Past President Martin Jayne who entertained us with a fiendish quiz! Every answer consisted of two words which both started with the letter B (Example:- A famous French female actor ..... Answer Bridget Bardot.) That was one of the easier questions!@

Sophie Anscombe from ‘The Independent Monitoring Board - Prisons’ was the speaker on 27th April. Sophie is a member of the small staff team supporting volunteers on the IMP Boards at each prison in the country. Like magistrates, IMB members are publicly appointed: historically they were known as Prison Visitors.
They are the point of contact for prisoners: lay people who give an oversight of conditions, challenges/issues and good practice in individual prisons. They act as an independent watch dog, asking themselves “How does ###x make me feel?”.
They do not manage, they monitor.
The role needs 2 to 5 hours per visit, with monthly monitoring meetings. Teams aim to carry out weekly visits so that through familiarity, trust is built. The IMB volunteers are friendly representatives not representative friends, but points and issues are escalated through them.
Anyone interested in volunteering with an IMB can contact them through
https://imb.org.uk/

Currently volunteers are locally needed at Haverigg.

On 30th March Kendal Rotarians had an opportunity to hold a penguin egg, courtesy of the speaker Bob Wells whose work as a physicist was based at 76°S 26°W at Halley Bay as part of the British Antarctic Survey team in 1969/70.
In those days Health & Safety was yet to come, so it was an icy ladder down to their sub-snow workspace and living quarters.
Halley Bay was a two month voyage away from home, with a three week ice free docking window when everything and everyone for a twelve month stay had to be delivered /returned.
Bob shared his photos of his time in Antarctica - the thrill of throwing a jug of boiling water into the air and watch it freeze instantly (temperatures ranged from a balmy -2°C to -52°C, with a mean of -21°C) to days off watching the emperor penguin colony of about 20k birds circulate to keep warm.
Part of Bob’s role was to record and try to work out ways of anticipating aurora displays and he showed us a photo of frozen mercury - they had to add Va**um to keep it liquid in order to measure temperatures.
We also had a chance to see some of Bill’s kit - his canvas boots and wolverine anorak - neither of which needed to be waterproof as it’s very dry down there.

Samantha Ridgway from u3a South Lakes was our speaker on 23rd March. She tempted Rotarians with a list of nearly 90 activity groups from the University of the 3rd Age organisation happening locally.
The u3a began in Toulouse; the UK model is not attached to an actual university, but shares the same ethos of self help and shared learning - sharing skills, knowledge and experience.
u3a S Lakes is an independent charity affiliated to the UK organisation. There is a £15 membership fee and a £2/session charge which covers venue hire.
