What’s gardening got to do with how long you’ll live for?

From a research perspective, the answers quite a lot actually.

This is because some of the most fascinating longevity research isn’t about expensive supplements, cold plunges or biohacking.

Rather, it’s about everyday activities that people can sustain for decades.

And of these, gardening appears to be the most powerful.

For example, research following older adults for over a decade found that people who regularly gardened had significantly lower mortality rates, even after accounting for age, health status, lifestyle factors and socioeconomic differences.

Why might gardening be so powerful? Because it combines many of the ingredients we know support healthy ageing:

•Regular low-to-moderate physical activity
•More time outdoors and exposure to natural light •Reduced stress and improved mental wellbeing
•Greater consumption of fruit and vegetables
•A sense of purpose, routine and achievement
•Connection with nature and often with other people

Even more so, studies have also linked gardening with better cardiovascular health, lower rates of diabetes, improved physical and mental health, healthier diets and lower predicted mortality risk in older adults.

Interestingly, researchers from the University of Edinburgh found that frequent gardeners not only had better physical function and psychological wellbeing but also showed a 22% lower mortality risk over long-term follow-up.

The lesson? Longevity isn’t usually built through things we do for six weeks.

Rather, it’s built through things we enjoy enough to do our whole life, and of these gardening appears to reign supreme, so here’s to all the gardeners out there!

🌟 Celebrating Hartlepool’s Volunteers – 4th June! 🌟

On 4th June, CLIP will be proud to attend the Hartlepool Volunteers Awards & Celebration Event, organised by Hartlepool Opportunities Partnership - HOP Hartlepool Volunteer Network.

The event has officially sold out, highlighting just how valued volunteers are across our town and the incredible impact they have on local communities.

We're delighted that our Sam from CLIP will be performing alongside Jamie from Something Positive Solutions, sharing some feel-good songs to help celebrate the occasion, with Nancy the guitar making a special appearance too! 🎸🎶

Volunteers are the backbone of so many organisations, groups and projects across Hartlepool. They give their time, skills and compassion to support others, strengthen communities and help create opportunities for people to thrive.

A huge thank you to HOP Hartlepool Volunteer Network for organising this fantastic event and for recognising the amazing people who make such a difference every day. It was great meeting with Tracy Bushnall to discuss the event!

To all volunteers across Hartlepool , thank you for everything you do. You are the heart of our community. ❤️

💙 The Importance of Being Kind 💙

Kindness costs nothing, but it can mean everything to someone else.
You never truly know what another person is going through.

Many people live with disabilities, hidden disabilities, mental health challenges, chronic pain, long term conditions or are feeling vulnerable. A smile, a kind word, patience, or simply being understanding can make a huge difference.
What you don’t see:
• Pain that never switches off
• Anxiety that feels overwhelming
• Fatigue that others don’t understand
• Sensory overload
• Struggles that are quietly carried every day

Let’s choose to be kind to one another ... Always. 💙
Because you never know how much someone might need it today. 🤗
