☕️Lovely coffee morning on this fine Friday for our wonderful volunteers!

We said goodbye to Christina who has volunteered with us for many years 🥺. Christina said:

“I’ve definitely got more from this than I’ve given.”

And we know the amount she’s given, so that must be a lot!

Thank you to Christina for all these years of hard work, to everyone who came along, and to all our wonderful volunteers who couldn’t make it.

Deacon Kieran (in the centre of this photo) is due to be ordained as a priest of the Motherwell Diocese on 19th June.

🙏We pray for him and wish him well as he begins his ministry in our Church.

We were delighted to feature on the University of Glasgow Spotlight podcast this week!

The podcast asks an important question: do we still value development aid?

Nicola spoke with SCIAF's Director of Public Engagement, Ben Wilson, about Scotland's distinctive role, the Scottish Government's commitments, and whether initiatives like aid match funding could create a different path forward.

Mark and his daughter, Liv Maria, have been supporting SCIAF all the way from over in Oslo!

He told us what they've been up to and why:

"Here in Norway, my 8-year-old daughter Liv Maria and I managed to raise about 150 quid; £100 in our WEE BOX (I picked one up on our last visit home at St Andrew's, Bearsden), which we have sent to you, and £50 to her Caritas Norge box which she got from her school, St Sunniva's in Oslo.

"She was my 'social media assistant', taking photos for my "40 Coats of Lent" project...last year it was hats....and also handed out SCIAF stickers to her schoolmates whilst wearing her super-cool, oversized blue SCIAF t-shirt... more of a dress on her, actually. These goodies were kindly supplied to us last year by your colleague Michael, and as we love getting our money's worth, you can rely on this dynamic duo of Donnellys donning our t-shirts again for future SCIAF fun(d)raising efforts.

"It started off with my wife Anne saying:

"'I hope you're not looking at hats. You've already got enough to wear a different one every day in Lent.' Knowing this to be rubbish, I replied, 'I bet you a 40 quid donation to SCIAF I don't.' I had over 50😳."

Thank you to our SCIAF fundraisers around the world helping our sisters and brothers who need it most!

⭐This Volunteers' Week, we say thank you to ALL the wonderful people who give up their time for SCIAF!

Here are few of our inspirational volunteers in action:

1. Anne-Marie Douglas is a parish volunteer at St Peter’s in Morningside. She arranges coffee mornings and afternoon teas for our appeals; she puts posters up and leaves prayers at the back of the church; and also helps with a Real Gifts stall at Christmas. What a star.

2. Michael Rainey found time outside volunteering in schools for SCIAF to fundraise for our sisters and brothers around the world by paddling 25 miles in his kayak. His volunteering usually involves visiting a local primary or high school, explaining our humanitarian work around the world and using a game or activity to illustrate issues raised. Absolutely amazing.

3. SCIAF volunteer Cath McGrath received her Benemerenti Medal from Bishop Brian McGee at our carol concert for her dedication to SCIAF and the Catholic Church. Cath’s voluntary work has mainly been in schools, where she put her many years of teaching experience to good use, spreading the word about SCIAF’s work overseas as well as the causes and effects of poverty. So inspirational.

These infographics from Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development summarise key parts from the first encyclical of Pope Leo XIV, Magnifica Humanitas.

Magnifica Humanitas means “Magnificent humanity” and it explores the importance of preserving the wonder of the human person as we navigate artificial intelligence.
