After years, or even decades, of wrongful imprisonment, many people assume exonerees are automatically compensated for the time they lost. In reality, compensation is not even guaranteed.
While some states have compensation statutes, the requirements vary widely, and some exonerees are excluded altogether. Others must work through lengthy legal processes before they have a chance of receiving any compensation. Many will receive nothing.
Exonerees are released from prisons they never should have been in and expected to find housing, employment, transportation, and healthcare while rebuilding relationships, learning technologies that rapidly changed without them, and adjusting to a world they had never known before.
Even when compensation is available, it cannot restore lost years, lost relationships, or opportunities that will never come again. For many exonerees, it is only the beginning of rebuilding a life that was taken from them.
