Help improve Annual Health Checks for people with a learning disability.

In 2022, the Scottish Government promised that people with a learning disability should receive an Annual Health Check every year.

Enable wants to hear about people's experiences. Have you had a Health Check? Were you invited? Was it helpful? We're asking people with a learning disability, as well as family members, friends and supporters, to complete our short survey.

Congratulations to everyone receiving their exam results today, whatever your next step, your future is full of possibilities.

At Enable Works, we're passionate about helping young people unlock their potential and find opportunities that are right for them. Through our Stepping Up programme, we're proud to support 75 schools, helping 1,400 young people with disabilities build confidence and prepare for the future.

We're especially proud that 98% of participants move on to positive destinations in further education, training, or employment.

To everyone collecting their results today, celebrate how far you've come, and remember there are many paths to success.

"I don't do the job for recognition - I do it because I care about the people I support and the team I work with." – Seona Thatcher

For nearly 25 years, Seona Thatcher has dedicated her career to supporting people to live the lives they choose.

As a Personal Assistant with Enable Cares, she's built lasting relationships with the people she supports, always taking the time to understand the individual and adapt her approach to what matters most to them. For Seona, person-centred support isn't just a way of working - it's the foundation of everything she does.

"Something that worked yesterday might not work today, so you have to be patient and keep trying. It's about understanding the person in front of you and being willing to try again and again until something works. The longer you support someone, the more you understand them... That relationship is everything."

Over the years, Seona has also become a trusted mentor to colleagues, sharing her experience and helping to create a supportive team where everyone can learn from one another.
Some of her proudest moments have come from helping people experience opportunities they never thought possible.

"Helping people experience things they've never had the chance to before - like supporting someone to go abroad for the first time and seeing how much joy that brought them - is incredible to be part of."

Recognised with Enable's Putting People We Work For First Award, Seona's story is a testament to the power of compassion, patience and genuine human connection. It's a reminder that, when people are truly at the heart of every decision, lives can be changed in extraordinary ways.

Meet Amy Hume, winner of Enable's Leader of the Year.

Amy started her career in social care at 18, just around the corner from home.

Over 25 years later, she's still in social care and now leading the way as Head of Development at Enable Cares.

Amy joined Enable in 2020 as Head of Enable All, right as the pandemic was unfolding globally. Operating during this time was a 'pivotal point' for the sector and like many across the sector, Amy and her colleagues navigated uncharted territory.

Whether it's a team member, a person she supports, or a family member, Amy's leadership is described as a balance of compassion and accountability, showing up to anchor the team.

"The people I met and the lives that could be changed for the better in social care; it's a very rewarding and challenging career choice, but it's real, it's real life."

Careers in social care aren't just jobs. They're journeys that shape who you become.💜

This week, members of the National Self-Advocacy Forum came together to explore how we turn human rights into real change in people's lives.

Focusing on Articles 29 and 30 of the UNCRPD, self-advocates shared their experiences and insights on participation in public life, sport, leisure and recreation, highlighting the importance of ensuring people with learning disabilities have a voice in the decisions, research and services that affect them.

A powerful message emerged throughout the day: People with learning disabilities are not waiting for others to make their rights a reality. They are leading that work themselves.

At Enable, we're proud to support self-advocates as they continue to influence research, policy and practice across Scotland.
