We’re creating a new Wildlife-Friendly Venue Directory to highlight venues across Scotland that have committed to keeping balloon and sky lantern releases off their grounds.

If you manage a hotel you can support the campaign by taking our pledge.

The consultation asking for public views and experiences closes on the 7th October. We know that millions of people are fed up with the annual terror caused by fireworks. Now is the time to speak up!

Help us stop this from happening again! Ask the Scottish Government to ban helium balloon and sky lantern releases in Scotland. How many more animals need to die for the Government to take this seriously?

Need some evidence? Most recently, a three-month-old calf choked to death after chewing and inhaling a discarded plastic helium balloon at Barns Farm in Dalgety Bay, Fife (2026).

He is not the only victim:

🦆 A duckling had to be rescued by the RSPCA (England and Wales) after ingesting a deflated balloon and it's string (2024)

🐏 A Ewe in Skipton choked to death on balloons (2024)

🦭 A seal pup died in North Wales after becoming entangled in a balloon string (2023)

🐄 Lisa the 6 month calf died in Beckingham after ingesting a balloon - her mum was found desperately licking her to try and wake her up (2020)

🐎 A young horse in Harrogate suffered broken neck and died after swallowing the string of a landed helium balloon (2017). Another horse was set on fire, losing it's tail and having severe burns to it's legs, after a sky lantern landed in it's paddock (2018)

🐐 Holly the goat, at only 9 months old, had throat punctured by metal wire from a sky lantern, causing her death in Warwick (2011)

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Sign the petition, ban helium balloon and sky lantern releases in Scotland, and help stop more animals from facing horrific deaths.

It's time to use our voices and ask the Scottish Government to ban helium balloon and sky lantern releases in Scotland.

Not convinced?

The facts:

- It is estimated that 100,000 marine animals die every year as a result of balloon ingestion.
- While aggregate numbers are not officially published, national farming organizations like the National Farmers' Union (NFU) regularly issue warnings because balloons are a constant threat to livestock pastures. Like in the case of the little 3 month of Fife calf, pictured in our post.
- Seabirds are 32 times more likely to die after ingesting balloon fragments.
- While 32 councils in Scotland have banned the release of helium balloons and sky lanterns from council land, this is not enforced, and releases on private land happen regularly, as is the case with several planned balloon releases announced in local newspapers recently.

If you haven't, now is your last chance- this will be taken off BBC Alba tomorrow. The BBC ALBA documentary "St Kilda's Starving Sheep" offers essential insight into the lives of the Sheep on St Kilda, and the tremendous challenges they face annually.

With the welfare and management of these sheep still under intense scrutiny, (and winter just around the corner), we think it's important that as many people as possible have the opportunity to see their story.
