Our forthcoming workshop schedule.
If you're interested in any of the workshops, please email the club at [email protected]

Silver casting - 10th October (£60)
A chance to turn scrap silver into new pieces using the sand casting method. All tools will be provided as well as demonstrations and advice on hand.
Silver is not included in the workshop fee however a small amount of silver will be available to buy from the club on the day, should you not have any. There will also be demonstrations of both pewter and aluminium casting.

Fly press - 24th October and 7th November (£60)
This workshop will teach you how to make a custom perspex mould for the fly press. The mould can then be used to press metal into, to create a puffed, domed, or embossed shape. Please note that this is
a two part workshop, with part 1 and part 2 being two weeks apart. Each will be a half day in the afternoon.

Plique-à-jour enamelling - 31st October (£60)
Plique-à-jour involves applying enamel to cells that have no backing. It is an advanced technique, therefore this workshop is only suitable to those who have enamelled before (although no prior knowledge of plique-à-jour is necessary). Plique-à-jour can be done with silver or copper.

Building your wire wrapping skills - 14th November (£60)
In this class you will build from basic to more advanced wire weaving and wrapping techniques to create a unique pendant. You will use the new techniques you learn to choose how to make your pendant unique. Materials will be provided for a £5 fee, however you are welcome to bring your own cabochon stone. Stones should be round, oval, or teardrop in shape and 30-40mm in size.

More details to follow.

To all our followers, many of you will be aware of the news that Edinburgh University are closing approximately 90 courses to new entrants to coming years.

A petition has been raised asking Edinburgh University to review their decision about several courses run by the Edinburgh College of Arts

One of the Guild of Enamellers has posted this, giving far more information on the issue.

We are just raising awareness of the issue. It is up to you personally, if you wish to sign the petition

📣 Join the call to save craft and design courses at Edinburgh College of Art

Craft Scotland have launched a petition to help capture support flooding in from across the UK and around the world. We plan to share this petition with Scottish Government and politicians, and university decision makers to help fuel a reversal of these closures.

✍️ Please sign and share this petition to help save these vital strands of Scotland's craft and design education ecosystem. https://buff.ly/g1Vj5r4

The University of Edinburgh recently announced their decision to close three highly successful undergraduate programmes at ECA: Jewellery and Silversmithing, Textiles and Performance Costume.

These courses represent the remainder of ECA’s undergraduate degrees in craft disciplines and teach vital making skills, alongside nurturing creative imagination and design expertise.

These closures will devastate educational opportunities for future generations of professional makers and designers. As young people look towards a sustainable A.I. resistant career, the closure of these courses denies Scotland's creative talent the skills and training required to build successful futureproofed careers in craft and design.

Hieveryone,
I just realised that we hadn’t posted for months. We’ve obviously all just been out and about enjoying life!

We do run ad-hoc lapidary training workshops.

Look out for our autumn workshops, we should be able to announce them August/September.

A bit short notice but if you are near St Margaret’s over the next two days - there is a great exhibition on in Gallery 1 on the 3rd floor, until Saturday evening, by the Arienas collective, who support independent artists.

One of the participants is the very talented Sheila MacDonald who kindly ran a class for the club last year. Her enamel brooches really caught my eye…

Apart from Mark, ‘the Edinburgh Sketcher’, who demonstrates sketching, there was also macrame, mosaic, enamel and so many other things.

Shona, Gill McG and I took the time to wander around- well worth it!

Well, it’s been a busy few weeks for the club!

3rd May we had a very successful casting class

10th May, we had the most amazing Open day! A great attendance, many cakes & teas/coffees. Large displays of stones, jewellery. Let’s not forget the ever popular ‘Have a go enamelling’.

We are only a small club, totally funded by our members and we really welcome the support by everyone, including our friends and families. This Open Day made a huge inroad into our rent bill for the quarter- thank you everyone!

This Saturday, we were running a class on fold forming copper…

52 years and counting! Let’s go for the 100!

Thanks again
