What is Widening Participation?

[ID: All four slides are a mix or light brown and pale yellow. First slide reads “WHAT IS WIDENING PARTICIPATION?” Second slide has a definition of WP “Widening Participation refers to the work done by universities to ensure that a broad range of people from differing backgrounds are able to attend higher education. Specifically, WP aims to increase the number of underrepresented and marginalised people who attend university and provide them with the support they need throughout their university experience” Third slide has a list of different groups of people that are considered as WP “Students from low income backgrounds and from low socioeconomic groups, First Generation students, Students with refugee or asylum seeker status Young careers and care experienced students, Estranged students, students from underrepresented ethnic groups, Students with disabilities” and the forth slide has a list of resources.]

After a very successful year last year hosting our first ever panel and networking event which received such great response we are looking forward to putting together some bigger events and campaigns this year!

📣Next panellist announcement - Ryan McCuaig!!

Ryan is a solicitor at Thorntons LLP, one of the largest independent, full-service law firms in Scotland. He is care experienced and grew up in Easterhouse, Glasgow. Ryan graduated from the University of Strathclyde with a First-Class Law Degree, then attended the University of Glasgow on a Post-Grad Talent Scholarship, graduating with a Diploma in Professional Legal Practice with Merit. Ryan chairs the board of Who Cares? Scotland, a charity that provides advocacy and support to care experienced people and has a Youtube Channel on which he shares advice and resources aimed at law students from non-traditional backgrounds. We are delighted to have him join our panel!!
