Unbelievable
CHANGES TO SCHOOL TRANSPORT FOR KIRKLISTON PUPILS “TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE” 🚌
As local councillors, we are deeply concerned to have learned of plans from Council education officers to remove dedicated school bus provision for over 40% of children from Kirkliston who attend Queensferry High School.
Under proposals due to take effect at the start of the new academic year, these pupils would instead be expected to rely on public transport. These plans were developed without any prior discussion with us as local councillors.
There are serious flaws in the proposals. Under the current Lothian Buses timetable, many pupils would need to catch a bus at around 7.15am in order to arrive at school. This would see them reaching Queensferry High almost 50 minutes before the school day begins, as later services would arrive after the start of classes.
There are also significant concerns about capacity. The number of pupils affected — almost 200 — far exceeds the stated capacity of a standard double-decker Lothian bus, which is 131 passengers. Despite this, there has been no indication that additional public bus services will be provided to accommodate demand.
Taken together, these issues make the proposals wholly unacceptable.
That is why we have lodged an emergency motion to the Council’s Education Committee, which will be considered next week. Our motion calls for these changes to be paused while an urgent meeting takes place between Council officers, parent council representatives and local councillors to find a workable solution that protects pupils and families.
