Did you know that 5.5 billion people live in countries with little
or no access to controlled medicines for pain management?

Morphine, one of the most effective tools for relieving pain in palliative
care, is affordable, widely manufactured, and on the WHO Essential
Medicines List. Yet for most of the world, it remains out of reach.
This is not a supply problem. It is a policy problem.

On , we are calling on governments to act to review the
policies that stand between patients and pain relief, and to make
palliative care a real part of every national health system.

We're proud of work work in this area and our newly announced project with the Palliative Care Association of Malawi to improve access to oral morphine in rural communities.

Who shapes global health priorities?

This was the question asked a meeting of the Edinburgh University Global Health Society this week. EMMS International Director of Programmes Sarah Gibson presented the keynote address before joining a panel discussion.

Their conculsion: Philanthropic funding can play an important role, but priorities must be led by communities and countries that stand to benefit – not be imposed upon them. It must also be part of a broader funding mix with governments continuing to invest in global health to foster an equitable and secure world.

A new ‘Hub and Spokes’ pain relief model has the potential to transform the lives of hundreds in Malawi

"Imagine that someone you love is living with advanced cancer and is in terrible pain. Your husband or wife. Your son or daughter. Your grandchild. What would you want for them? You would want someone to come. You would want them to have medicine to control their pain. You would want someone to listen, to care and to give them hope."

These are the words of Lameck Thambo, Executive Director of Palliative Care Association of Malawi (PACAM), a national network of healthcare professionals and organisations working together to develop affordable palliative care across Malawi.

Working alongside PACAM and other Malawian partners, EMMS has helped extend palliative care skills and expertise across Malawi, helping ensure that quality care could reach people far beyond the major cities. Supporting a local organisation like PACAM means strengthening a Malawian-led network that can continue advocating for better palliative care long after an individual project ends.
