Edinburgh Young Carers

Edinburgh Young Carers We are a voluntary organisation working with and on behalf of young & young adult carers in Edinburgh Not having enough money for basic needs.

Edinburgh Young Carers works with young people aged 5 to 25 years old who care for or are affected by someone else at home - usually a parent or sibling. The person they care for may suffer from:

•mental health problems
•disability
•chronic ill-health
•drug and alcohol misuse

The type of caring responsibilities a young person has, will vary depending on the needs and circumstances of the person

they care for. Unfortunately, most young carers go unnoticed or unrecognised, until there is a crisis. What is the impact of being a young carer?

•Emotional wellbeing: Putting other people’s needs first, being worried, anxious or stressed. Having feelings of guilt, anger, being trapped, isolated and being misunderstood.

•Physical wellbeing: Suffering from pains or strains from heavy lifting or helping someone to wash or dress, or feeling unwell.

•Social skills: Little or no free time to meet up with friends. Feeling isolated and lacking confidence.

•Schooling: Difficulties concentrating in class, feeling tired throughout the day, worrying about the cared for person whilst at school, little time to do homework. Regularly absent from or late for school

•Financial wellness: Some families may have a low income.

🌞⛴️ Nurture in Nature – Week 2 Adventure! 🌿🌊

Last week, our amazing 5–9 year old young carers enjoyed a fantastic day trip to Inchcolm Island as part of our Nurture in Nature Summer Programme.

After catching the bus to South Queensferry, we boarded the Maid of the Forth and set sail across the Firth of Forth. Once on Inchcolm Island, the children had a brilliant time exploring the historic abbey, discovering the beach, and venturing through the fascinating World War I tunnel.

We were incredibly lucky with the weather, enjoying beautiful sunshine throughout the day, and of course no summer adventure would be complete without finishing with some well-earned ice creams! 🍦☀️

A huge thank you to Historic Environment Scotland for such a warm welcome to Inchcolm Island and for helping make the day so memorable for our young carers.

💚 Creating opportunities for fun, friendship, exploration and a chance to simply enjoy being children is what our summer programme is all about.

EXTRA! EXTRA! 💥Our 13-15s and 16+ young carers teamed up for an amazing day at Sky Up Academy Studios to explore the world of media and make their own news reports on the topic of young carers 🎬

They took on roles both on an off camera including presenters, producers, editors and camera operators - developing new skills and gaining an insight into the creative industry! Here's a peek at all the behind the scenes action 😊👀

Our Young Carers put their ten weeks' of climbing skills at alien rock into outdoor action last week, successfully scaling the crag at Benny Beg by Crieff! It was a fantastic, sunny day and a great end to the climbing programme - with some picture-perfect moments captured by the talented EDGE Photography. Thank you so much to Urban Uprising and ClimbScotland for making it all possible - our young carers had an amazing time! 🧗🪖✨

What a day we had on Friday! Our Young Carers had an amazing time paddleboarding in the sunshine - with plenty of laughs, lots of splashes, and lots of getting wet in the Union Canal! 🌊💙

A huge thank you to Cynthia and the managers from JA The Bruntsfield Edinburgh (Bruntsfield Hotel) for joining us and helping make the day so special, including a lovely lunch for everyone. It was such a valuable experience, and our young people had the best time! 😁

We are very grateful to both the Windward Fund and Foundation Scotland for awarding Edinburgh Young Carers with a grant of £19,000 to go towards our Counselling Service over the next year 🌟

Many young carers experience heightened levels of stress and anxiety that can be difficult to manage alone. Our Counselling Service has been running since 2017, and offers a safe and confidential space for young carers to explore their feelings, develop coping strategies to manage emotions and make positive, lasting changes.

To find out more about our Counselling Service, please contact your Development Worker, give us a call on 0131 475 2322 or email: [email protected]
