Basic Power Tools Induction is back! For anyone who’s ever felt unsure about picking up a drill.

It’s built for complete beginners, homeowners, volunteers, students, and anyone who wants to build genuine confidence using power tools safely.

2 hours, in a small group, you’ll cover the essentials.

Safe use of drills and impact drivers.
Choosing the right fixings.
Accurate measuring and drilling.
Basic cutting.
And much more.

Plus the common mistakes worth avoiding.

Restoring Barnton Bunker isn’t always about the things you can see.

One recent job has been tackling a much less glamorous, but really important part of the bunker: the drainage system!

For decades, some of the access points to the main drainage system had been left without proper manhole covers. Dirt and debris could get into the sewage system, causing repeated blockages and expensive call-outs to clear and survey the drains.

The problem? The original access chambers are much larger than modern standard manhole covers, so we couldn’t simply fit a new cover.

Instead, we built wooden formwork around the existing openings and poured concrete to reduce them to a standard size. This means modern manhole covers can now be fitted properly.

It’s not the most visible part of the restoration, but it’s exactly the kind of work that helps protect the bunker and keep it functioning for years to come.

Another piece of Barnton Bunker’s restoration, one job at a time.

It’s official, Fringe is going underground! Barnton Bunker is a 2026 Edinburgh Fringe venue (for the first time). 🎭 Venue 274.

A Cold War nuclear bunker, built to survive the end of the world, is opening its doors to live performance for the very first time during the Fringe Festival.

Behind blast doors that once guarded a nation, Fringe is going underground, and we couldn’t be prouder to be hosting “Tiny Apocalypses that led me here.

An emotional story, uniquely interconnected, across different eras of human life and spanning 3 continents.

The Lord Provost’s visit recognises the dedication of our volunteers and the remarkable progress made in preserving and restoring Barnton Bunker, an important Second World War and Cold War heritage site.

Since 2011, restoration has taken place in carefully managed phases as funding has allowed, enabling more of the site to be safely opened to the public while protecting its historic character for future generations.

This visit follows a year of growing recognition for the project, including our nomination for the Scottish Thistle Awards and receiving the Inspiring Volunteer Award, reflecting the commitment and hard work of everyone involved in bringing this unique site back to life.

We were honoured to welcome the Lord Provost to Barnton Bunker and sincerely thank him for taking the time to visit and learn more about our work.

Barnton Bunker was built in secret.

An R4-class nuclear bunker at the heart of the UK’s ROTOR radar network, later chosen as Scotland’s Regional Seat of Government. The place where officials planned to govern “from the ashes.”

After decades of abandonment and fire damage, it’s being brought back to life by a grassroots restoration. 

During our tour, you’ll descend underground, stand where RAF crews tracked Soviet bombers, see the BBC four-minute warning studio, and walk raw, unrestored spaces beside rooms returned to their Cold War state.

The community garden is in full bloom this summer, and it’s amazing to see everything thriving.

Every Wednesday 2-4pm, volunteers and locals come together to plant, maintain and care for the garden. If you’re an experienced gardener or just fancy getting your hands dirty for an hour or two, everyone is welcome.

One of the best parts? The fresh vegetables and herbs grown in the garden are used to make delicious lunches for our volunteers, making it a true community effort from seed to plate.

Our Basic Power Tools Induction is designed to help you build confidence in a relaxed, supportive environment.

If you’re a complete beginner, a homeowner tackling DIY, a volunteer, or simply keen to learn a new skill, this workshop is for you.

During this two-hour hands-on session, you’ll learn:

✔ How to safely use drills and impact drivers
✔ How to choose the right fixings for the job
✔ Measuring and drilling techniques
✔ Basic cutting skills
✔ Practical tips to avoid common mistakes
