🥼 Aberdeen Science Centre welcomed some new “lab partners” this week, opening their doors to a group of guide dog puppies.

Visiting new places helps our pups develop confidence and resilience, while giving them the opportunity to learn alongside their puppy pals.

And of course, they all had great chemistry… 🧬🐾

Lorna Barclay, Puppy Development Supervisor, said: “Visiting Aberdeen Science Centre offered so many new experiences for our puppies, including unfamiliar sights and sudden sounds.

“It was a great opportunity for our puppies to develop in this unique setting, learning new skills and socialising with other dogs. We would like to thank Aberdeen Science Centre for enabling our community of puppy raisers to come together and support their pups.”

To join our wonderful team of volunteer puppy raisers in the North East, you can learn more about the life-changing role at the link below.

We're excited to be getting out and about in June to various events - the perfect opportunity to find out more about volunteering! 💛

4 June - Giffnock Library, 10.30am-11.30am. Hear from Guide Dogs' staff and a volunteer puppy raiser.

6 June - Stonehouse Gala Day and 13 June - Strathaven Gala Day. We’ll be at the Avondale Radio stand from 1-3pm - a big thanks to them for inviting us along!

20 June - Loreburne Shopping Centre in Dumfries, 10am-3pm. Meet the dogs, chat to volunteers and staff, and find out how you can get involved in Dumfries and Galloway. You can chat first-hand to a puppy raiser and find out what they enjoy about the role, or speak to a staff member about the support you’d receive. Opportunities available include raising a guide dog puppy, shorter term puppy fostering, looking after a trainee guide dog weekends only, or joining the Dumfries and Galloway Fundraising Group at events like this. The group will aim to show off the puppies’ skills at 11am and 1pm in a short demo, near M&S.

Can you help us think of a caption for this funny photo? 😂

The photo shows trainee guide dog Judy, black, sitting in a room at our Forfar centre. She is in the middle of two life-sized black lab plushies, which are standing up. The one on the left is looking over to the side of the room. Judy and the other stuffed toy are looking into the camera. Judy has a bemused expression on her face!

Join our family day out at Edinburgh Zoo! 🐧

Guide Dogs' Children and Young People Services are delighted to invite children with a vision impairment and their immediate family members to Edinburgh Zoo on Saturday 19 September.

Edinburgh Zoo is home to more than 2500 incredible animals and, on the day, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the natural world and the challenges facing wildlife.

Our event will begin at 10am, when the Guide Dogs team will meet you at the Lemur Lodge, our exclusively hired space for the day. They will be ready to greet you with both hot and cold refreshments and are available for conversations throughout the day.

After registering with us, you will have plenty of time to enjoy the zoo! We will then come together for a complimentary packed lunch at 12.30pm, before finishing at 3pm with free ice cream for all the children. 🍦

Places are limited so booking is essential. You can request a booking form by email at [email protected]

Please note: Children with a vision impairment plus one parent/guardian are free. Immediate family members are £7.50.

We had a wonderful time celebrating International Guide Dog Day with our friends at Sight Scotland Veterans last month. 💛

As part of the event, children from a local nursery were invited along to learn about the incredible role guide dogs play in enabling people to lead active and independent lives.

The children listened intently as Veteran Mick shared how life-changing his guide dog Bounty has been, as well as when guide dog trainer Jacqui – accompanied by future guide dog Lassie - spoke about what goes into their training. 🦮

A huge thank you to Sight Scotland Veterans and the children from Todholm Nursery for making it such a lovely afternoon!

The Scottish Association of Guide Dog Owners (SAGDO) is inviting new members to join their group. 🦮

SAGDO is a friendship group, formed in 1958, that brings together people from across the UK with a common interest in guide dog ownership.

Members include experienced guide dog owners, as well as people who are waiting for their first guide dog, and represent all age groups.

The group has a yearly social weekend and they encourage members to provide news, tips, recommendations and advice that they think will be of interest to other members.

For more information or to become a member, you can contact Brian from the group by email at [email protected].

“I’m happiest around dogs so raising puppies for Guide Dogs is totally up my street. I absolutely love it.” 💙

Nimmi, from Bearsden, started raising puppies for Guide Dogs Scotland 10 years ago and is now encouraging others to take up the life-changing role. 🦮

She said: “You only need to speak to someone who has a guide dog to understand how important they are and the difference they make.

“To have a fully-trained guide dog, you need people to volunteer to raise the puppies – that’s enough motivation for me!”

We’re recruiting new volunteers in Milngavie & Bearsden and would love for you to join us at our “Paws with a Purpose” event, taking place at Milngavie Library on Monday 1 June, from 12pm to 1pm.

This event is free, but places should be reserved at the link below.
