To round out , we asked the team at Cauvin to share how they strive to understand and value the 'Seeing the Baby' theme for this year.
"At Cauvin House, mum and baby resource, we constantly strive to support the young women in our care to put themselves in their baby’s shoes to appreciate their perspective and to notice and value the ways their baby expresses themself. Our staff use various techniques to support our young women to notice the voice of their baby and see what they are trying to communicate with them. We ask them questions about what they think their baby’s facial expressions, body language and cues are telling them, point out what we think they might be telling us and show them ways they can let their baby choose what they want.
"One of the ways we do this is through a weekly catch up, where we encourage each young woman to think about what their baby enjoyed that week, what they have done to make them think they enjoyed this and what the young woman has done to show their baby they love them. This encourages our young women to put themselves in their baby’s shoes, think about what they might have enjoyed and how they communicate this with them. It helps keep their baby in mind and get them in the way of recognising and responding to their baby’s voice and cues.
"Staff offer our young women and babies opportunities to take part in various baby focussed activities to further highlight how we can listen to babies voices and respond to their cues. We offer Bookbug sessions, sensory discos, baby massage and sensory play where we offer props, resources and ways to ask babies what they would like to sing, play with or explore and model how to read their cues when they have had enough.
"We are excited to follow Baby Communication Week and hopefully find resources and even more ways to support interactions between our young women and their babies."
