Our eco-project ‘Pull for Purpose’ has now concluded with a wonderful celebration event at 5 Senses, our Tibshelf-based day service. Since the challenge started 12 months ago, our care and support services have collected over 60,000 ring pulls for charity, with Day Services receiving an award for their incredible 15,859 collected ring pulls. Well done to everyone who has taken part and supported an amazing achievement, what a lovely example of the difference we can make when we come together.

Our season of awareness walks has now come to a close and we couldn’t be happier with the impact all three walks have had for the people we support. Since the very first walk in April celebrating Autism Awareness, we have had walks that shine a light on Makaton and most recently the 5 Ways to Wellbeing. Our latest walk invited people to share their top tips and goals for how they would like to put their wellbeing first for the rest of the year. In celebration of their incredible ideas, we have created our very own Wellbeing bingo sheet, full of ideas on how we can prioritise our wellbeing.

Our service user influence group were joined by one of our day services for the most amazing fire safety training at Chesterfield fire station. We began with an interactive discussion around how we can prevent fires from starting, with the group correctly identifying cooking, candles and ci******es as some of the most common causes of fire.
We were then treated to a tour of the fire station, met some of the crew, tried on the uniform, rode in the fire truck with lights and sirens and even got to use the hose.
On behalf of all of us at emh care & support, we want to say the most incredible thank you to Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service for an exciting, engaging session that has made the most positive difference to the people we support.

Charlotte and Olivia recently attended a celebration event for their local Boccia club and both ladies received awards in recognition of their amazing development. Boccia is a Paralympic target sport that is widely played in the Special Olympics, the game is played indoors using soft leather balls with the objective to get closer to the jack than your opponent. Charlotte received a medal for the improvements she has made in her technique and concentration, Olivia received a trophy and both ladies received certificates for their incredible representation of Chesterfield in the National Boccia League. Massive congratulations to both Charlotte and Olivia, we couldn’t be more proud to know such sporting legends. Our Service User Influence Group recently hosted their very first workshop for people in care & support. Several people joined us for a day of bingo, baking, art and some amazing discussion around co-production. Since the group formed in February, they have gone from strength to strength ensuring service user inclusion in staff induction, our Corporate Business Plan and creating their own newsletter ‘The Co-Production Chronicle’.
The group are now utilising the workshop discussion for the creation of our own co-production toolkit, the ultimate guide for our staff in how to ensure co-production is a normal part of life at emh.

The arrival of the Summer Bank Holiday presented the ideal opportunity for us to look back over the season and share some highlights and wow do we have plenty. From walks in the park to inclusive cycling, discos and football matches, art projects, baking, coffee mornings, interactive games and ice skating, fishing trips and canal boat rides; and that’s before we get to trips covering Skegness, sea life centres and Scarborough. One thing is for sure, the people we are lucky enough to support know how to have a good time and it is a privilege to have so many memories to look back on. From all of us at emh, we wish you a very happy bank holiday and we can’t wait to share highlights of Autumn and of course Christmas (that will be upon us before we know it 😉).

This year we have gone further than ever to celebrate Makaton Awareness, providing a spotlight across the summer, culminating in a grand finale on Makaton international awareness day. Makaton has the power to build connections between people of all backgrounds and we have embraced this across our services, starting with our wonderful leadership team learning Makaton signs for all emh values. From there the summer has been one opportunity after another to come together, celebrate the power of friendship, communication whilst learning new signs and trivia in preparation for the creation of our first Makaton dictionary.
We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has taken the time to learn a sign and pass it on, we can’t wait to share our dictionary with the ultimate variety of jazzed up signs.
