Last week (Fri 28th Aug) saw us celebrate National Makaton awareness day! You'll see from our previous post, those we support and our colleagues have been busy creating a Makaton dictionary! This year’s theme was "Together" 🤝

The arrival of the Summer Bank Holiday presented the ideal opportunity for us to look back over the season and share some highlights and wow do we have plenty. From walks in the park to inclusive cycling, discos and football matches, art projects, baking, coffee mornings, interactive games and ice skating, fishing trips and canal boat rides; and that’s before we get to trips covering Skegness, sea life centres and Scarborough. One thing is for sure, the people we are lucky enough to support know how to have a good time and it is a privilege to have so many memories to look back on. From all of us at emh, we wish you a very happy bank holiday and we can’t wait to share highlights of Autumn and of course Christmas (that will be upon us before we know it 😉).

This year we have gone further than ever to celebrate Makaton Awareness, providing a spotlight across the summer, culminating in a grand finale on Makaton international awareness day. Makaton has the power to build connections between people of all backgrounds and we have embraced this across our services, starting with our wonderful leadership team learning Makaton signs for all emh values. From there the summer has been one opportunity after another to come together, celebrate the power of friendship, communication whilst learning new signs and trivia in preparation for the creation of our first Makaton dictionary.
We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has taken the time to learn a sign and pass it on, we can’t wait to share our dictionary with the ultimate variety of jazzed up signs.

We were joined by over 40 people at our monthly Happy Days Disco, it was a lovely night with amazing music provided by DJ Steve, a full dance floor and enough artwork to fill a wing in the National Gallery.
Our judges Kieran and Helen had an unenviable job choosing a winner of our art competition from a tableful of beautiful pictures with the talented Nancy crowned as the winner.
We also took nearly 50 suggestions for songs and artists that will be compiled into the ultimate Happy Days playlist, a fountain of variety ranging from Dancing Queen to Country Roads, Living on a Prayer and Cotton Eyed Joe. Thank you to everyone who brightened our evening, we’re looking forward to sharing more stories this year.

One of our Supported Living teams came together for an afternoon of interactive games and a picnic at our local office and training space. It was a lovely opportunity for people we support to have fun spending time together and the care and support team to catch up. Well done to everyone involved in organising it, we can’t wait to see what you do next.

Earlier this week we had an amazing time with another awareness walk in our local Queens Park. People we support joined us for a sunny morning hunting for picture cards, learning a variety of interesting facts about Makaton and adding some signs to our Makaton vocabulary.
At the end of the walk, everyone nominated more words they would like to learn in Makaton including ‘Seaside’, ‘Princess’ and my personal favourite ‘Chocolate’. We want to thank everyone who gave us the pleasure of their company and hope to see them back at our next walk in September.
