In two weeks' time our Choirs will be filling the Cathedral with beautiful music as they sing at The Cathedral Choirs' Summer Concert.

This annual event brings together the Boy and Girl Choristers, Consort and Lay Clerks, accompanied by the Cathedral organ. The programme will comprise choral and organ masterworks from the French and English traditions, including Louis Vierne's Messe Solennelle, Herbert Howell's Te Deum (Collegium Regale), and David Briggs' Ubi Caritas. There will also be an opportunity to find out more about the upcoming project to renew, restore and revitalise the Father Willis organ.

Have you ever spotted this stone carving on the outside of the Cathedral building?

It depicts PC George Russell of Carlisle, who was killed in the line of duty in February 1965.

While attending an incident at Oxenholme Station, PC Russell, who was unarmed, was killed and another officer seriously injured whilst apprehending a car thief.

PC Russell's funeral was held at the Cathedral and was attended by hundreds of his fellow officers, civic dignitaries, family, friends and members of the public. His actions on that night saw him receive the Queen's Police Medal, posthumously.

The carving was made by Ted Drinkwater, and was the idea of the Cathedral architect of the time, Norman Phillips.

Please look up and remember PC Russell the next time you walk through the grounds.

Congratulations to choristers Isobel and Samuel who were awarded the Ronald Wilson Award for Music at Choral Eucharist on Trinity Sunday.

This is the second presentation of the awards, following the creation of the accolade earlier this year.

The Revd Canon Pete Gunstone, Canon Precentor at Carlisle Cathedral said โ€œChoristerships in Carlisle Cathedral Choir offer the children and young people of this city and district an amazing opportunity to develop in musicianship within a Christian community. This development requires not just the dedication of all who support and animate the choral tradition, but also the commitment of the choristers themselves to learning music and musical skills and to working as a team. We are delighted to celebrate that Isobel and Samuelโ€™s dedication to the whole life of being a chorister has been recognised by their peers and we are grateful to the Wilson family whose generous support enables this choral tradition to flourish.โ€
