Ophthalmology nurse Laura Wilson is taking on her biggest challenge yet – the Great North Run.

The run, which starts in Newcastle and finishes in South Shields, takes place on September 13.

Laura is running to raise money for the Ophthalmology Department at the Cumberland Infirmary where she works – and hopes to top the £1,000 mark.

She said: “It’s an incredibly busy and ever-growing department, and as demand increases, so does the need for more and better equipment.

“Every donation will go towards improving the care we provide to our patients—whether that’s through updated technology or simply having more of the essential tools we rely on every day. These improvements can make a real difference to patients’ experiences and outcomes.

“If you’re able to donate, I’d be so grateful. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us move closer to providing the best possible care.

“Thank you so much for your support!”

On Friday, Justin Bell and his granddaughter Aoife handed over £1,500 to the bowel screening service 💙

Justin wanted to raise money and awareness after the bowel screening service detected changing polyps after taking a routine bowel screening test – a test he says he only did because his wife encouraged him to.

After being called for further tests, Justin underwent a colonoscopy and later a specialised keyhole procedure to remove a remaining polyp. He described the experience as far less daunting than he had feared.

Following an anxious wait for results, Justin received the news he was hoping for:
“I got quite emotional, the news was great as I am currently cancer free. If this wasn’t detected, I was told it would have become cancerous. This would have been a totally different outcome.”

The money will go to North Cumbria Hospitals NHS Charity and will be allocated specifically to the bowel screening service. Head over to the charity page to see Aoife singing her heart out in the hospital atrium 🌟

Justin Bell, who credits the NHS bowel screening programme with saving his life, hosted a 12‑hour music marathon fundraiser for the service

Justin handed over £1,500 to the bowel cancer screening service, with the help of his granddaughter Aoife, who was the star of the show 🌟

Justin held the event to raise not just money, but awareness of the bowel screening service.

You can watch some of the great musicians from the event over on the Beckermet Music Marathon page.

Justin said: “I got quite emotional, the news was great as I am currently cancer free. If this wasn’t detected, I was told it would have become cancerous. This would have been a totally different outcome.”

Justin says the experience has changed his outlook on life: “As a result of the testing programme, I’ve been given the chance to continue a normal life. We are only on this planet for a short time, so it’s best to make the most of it."

Fliss raised £350 to buy a wheelchair for the children’s ward 💙

Last summer, 13 year old Fliss, spent time on the Children’s Ward during two separate stays. While she was there, her family noticed how busy the ward could get. They saw that there were two children’s wheelchairs available, which was brilliant, but they wondered if more might be needed during peak times.

During her stays, Fliss also enjoyed the crafts, books and games on the ward. She especially loved spending time with Jane, play specialist, who made sure she always had something fun to do.

After going home, Fliss decided she wanted to thank the staff who had cared for her and her family. She set a goal to raise £300 for to help buy another children’s wheelchair for the ward. With help from her Grandma, sister Tilly, and friends, she organised a bake sale and created handmade crafts on her sewing machine to sell at her old primary school’s Christmas Fair.

Thanks to her hard work, the fundraiser reached £350. The money will help buy a new wheelchair, and anything left will go towards toys, crafts and other essentials for young patients.

Fliss’s mum Claire said: “The staff on the ward were amazing. They looked after our whole family, and we felt very cared for. They are an absolute credit to the NHS, and we felt very safe in their care.”

Fliss’s kindness and determination have made a real difference for other children who will use the ward in the future.

Cheryl Corson, who is battling breast cancer, braved the shave to raise money for Eden Breast Unit in Carlisle, via our North Cumbria Hospitals NHS Charity 💕

Cheryl Corson had her hair shaved last week ahead of her chemotherapy. She streamed the shave live on Facebook at a party attended by family and friends: facebook.com/share/v/1CBZrT5QG9/

She has already raised a huge £3,180 for the unit. Cheryl is also donating the hair she had removed to the The Little Princess Trust, which is a charity that provides free real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions.

Cheryl, 42, said she was determined to use her own fight to help others.

She said: “The Eden Breast Unit is amazing. They give you post-surgery bras and other support, but they don't get them on the NHS – those are donated by charities. And in other places, people don't get them at all. You've got to go and buy your own after your surgery. Lots of people aren't in the position where they can do that.

“I just thought I’d raise some money and do it for the Eden Breast Unit. They can do what they want to do with those funds and hopefully it can make somebody else's journey a bit easier.”

You can still support by donating to Cheryl's Just Giving page: justgiving.com/page/cheryl-corson-4

A west Cumbrian teacher who credits the NHS bowel screening programme with saving his life is hosting a 12‑hour music marathon to raise funds and awareness.

Justin Bell, assistant headteacher and maths teacher at Netherhall School in Maryport, was diagnosed with changing polyps after completing a routine bowel screening test, a test he says he only did because his wife insisted.

Justin said: “My biopsy showed the 30+mm polyps were changing and didn’t look great. The only way this was detected was through the bowel screening programme. I wasn’t going to do the test as I had no symptoms, but my wife made me do it.”

Following an anxious wait for results, Justin received the news he was hoping for: “I got quite emotional, the news was great as I am currently cancer free. If this wasn’t detected, I was told it would have become cancerous. This would have been a totally different outcome.”

He is now urging others to complete their screening kits: “Anyone who receives the test kit needs to understand it’s quick and simple. If people don’t do the test, things may become worse, in some cases, it may be too late. Just do it!”

Consultant endoscopist Mohammed Edilbe is also encouraging people to take part in screening. He said: “The test takes less than a minute and can be lifesaving. Most people will get a normal result, and even when the test is positive, it is far more common to find polyps that can be removed easily.”

To give back, Justin has organised a charity music marathon in Beckermet Reading Rooms on Saturday 31 January, running from 11am to 11pm. He will perform alongside his granddaughter Aoife, long‑time guitar partner Dave Hogg, and a line‑up of local musicians.

Proceeds will support NCIC’s Bowel Cancer Screening service. The money is coming to NCIC through the North Cumbria NHS Hospitals Charity.
