An exciting new chapter for Afia ❀️

Our 10-year-old western lowland gorilla has moved to Jersey Zoo to embark on the next phase of her life and hopefully start a family of her own. Our Curator of Mammals, Sarah Gedman, went with her to help settle her in to her new home.

Afia holds an extra-special place in our hearts at Bristol Zoo, having been our "miracle baby" from the UK's first successful emergency caesarean section for a gorilla. From there, she's grown into a strong, confident and intelligent adolescent, and although we'll miss her hugely, we know she'll do absolutely brilliantly in this next chapter.

Working with Indigenous communities in the Philippines πŸ‡΅πŸ‡

Alongside in-country partners PhilinCon, our team have been building relationships with village elders in Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park to understand their forest resource use 🌳

They ran workshops and activities to improve communication and increase awareness of cultural practices within the communities 🀝

This information will help us to consider our next steps for integrating Indigenous knowledge into conservation management and supporting sustainable use of the forest! πŸ’š

International Lynx Day 🐾

These distinctive, mysterious cats used to roam British woodland in 10,000 BC, before going extinct due to hunting and deforestation 🌳

In Bear Wood at Bristol Zoo Project, our Eurasian lynxes Zone and Loka live alongside brown bears, wolves and wolverines.

Thanks so much to De Vere Tortworth Court for sponsoring our lynxes πŸ’š

It's World Parrot Day! 🦜

Our flock of African grey parrots at Bristol Zoo Project was seized at an airport after being smuggled into the UK for the pet trade 🧳

Each year, 20% of the population of this Endangered species is removed from the wild. At our conservation charity, the birds are part of a breeding programme to help bolster their numbers and save their species 🌍 πŸ’š

There's a striking new arrival in the Tropical House! 🦎

The spotted blue tree monitor is Endangered in the wild, and at Bristol Zoo Project they are part of a conservation breeding programme 🌍 πŸ’š

We were the first in the UK to successfully breed the species in 2019! 🀩
