September is Deaf Awareness Month! 💙💛
To us, every month should be Deaf Aware, but we’re taking this as an opportunity to share some of the top messages from our Deaf Kids Tip Kit booklets that we think everyone should know.
🧏 Despite misconceptions, the deaf community is vast, including many different types of hearing loss and hard of hearing individuals. It is diverse, vibrant and certainly not tiny!
👁️ Deafness doesn’t have a ‘look’ - some people wearing hearing devices, some don’t. Nothing should invalidate a deaf person's lived experience, or make them feel not ‘deaf enough’.
🗣️ Deaf communication is diverse. Some people are primarily sign language users, others are considered ‘oral deaf’, where they mainly communicate by speaking. Some people speak as they sign, whereas others choose not too. There are also lots of cool technologies such as loops, captioning devices, radio aids and amplifiers that many deaf people use to access sound.
🌟 Finally, deafness is unique! Don’t forget to ask someone what things help them most. Always be kind and ask with care.
