📢 Introducing our next Clinical Vice President (Medical)!

Congratulations to Professor Jonathan Murray, elected by UKKA members as the next Clinical Vice President (Medical) of the UK Kidney Association.

Jon is a Consultant Nephrologist at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and has contributed to the UKKA across clinical guidance, education, patient involvement and national policy.

👏 He helped establish the UKKA Acute Kidney Injury Special Interest Group, served as its Medical Co-Chair for five years and co-led the development of UKKA guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In his new role, Jon will help shape the Association’s priorities and represent medical members’ perspectives at Board level.

👏 New Medical Co-Chair of the AKI Special Interest Group.

The UKKA is pleased to announce Dr Andrew Lewington’s appointment as Medical Co-Chair of the Acute Kidney Injury Special Interest Group.

🩺 Andrew is a Consultant Renal Physician and Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in Leeds, with more than 20 years’ experience and a longstanding commitment to improving AKI care.

His work spans national guidance, research, education and quality improvement, including contributions to the NICE AKI guideline and Quality Standard, the AKI SIG’s work and regional improvement initiatives.

🤝 Andrew will work alongside Multi-Professional Co-Chair Becky Bonfield and SIG members to build on the group’s work to improve care for people affected by AKI.

We also thank Professor Jon Murray for his leadership and valuable contribution to the SIG.

📊 24 people start kidney replacement therapy every day in the UK.

What does the latest UK Renal Registry Annual Report tell us about kidney care?

At the end of 2024, more than 74,000 adults were receiving KRT across the UK.

The 28th Annual Report highlights important changes in treatment patterns:

🩺 In-centre haemodialysis numbers continued to rise in England.

💧 Peritoneal dialysis accounted for a greater proportion of first KRT treatments, increasing from 17.7% to 19%.

🫀 Kidney transplant activity fell by around 4% compared with 2023.

👧🏽 The number of children under 16 receiving KRT decreased, while numbers among young people aged 17–18 increased.

📈 These data help us understand how kidney care is changing, explore variation and identify opportunities to improve services.
