Upcoming PRIF webinar - Asset Management 🏗️

🚧 Roads, bridges, and heavy machinery are major public assets for Pacific Island countries, yet limited maintenance budgets, capacity constraints, climate impacts, and competing priorities often lead to faster‑than‑expected deterioration—raising lifecycle costs and reducing service delivery. 🌧️🔧

🌊 Building on the recent JICA asset management workshop in Palau, this PRIF Community of Practice webinar will share key lessons, highlight country experiences, and outline JICA’s upcoming in‑country support. It will also show how strong asset management practices support the Pacific Quality Infrastructure Principles (PQIP) by ensuring infrastructure continues to deliver value throughout its lifecycle. ♻️

A team from the Pacific Region Infrastructure Facility is in Fiji this week as part of a regional technical assistance mission to support the use of Nature-based Solutions in infrastructure planning and investment across the Pacific.

The team met with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change this morning to discuss Fiji’s experience, priorities and lessons in using natural systems to support more resilient development.

The discussions focused on how Nature-based Solutions can be better reflected in infrastructure planning, public investment, project design and long-term maintenance. This includes the use of mangroves, forests, wetlands, river systems and other natural assets to reduce flooding, coastal erosion, heat and other climate-related risks.

This work is about the choices we make before infrastructure is built. It is about asking whether a road, drain, bridge or coastal protection system will still serve people when the next flood, storm surge or extreme weather event comes.

The PRIF mission will help document existing and planned Nature-based Solutions in Fiji, identify challenges and good practices, and develop case studies that can inform regional guidance for other Pacific countries.

The Ministry welcomed the engagement and said the work would support Fiji’s wider efforts to align environmental protection, climate resilience and sustainable infrastructure development.

🔍 PRIF is seeking an International Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist, an International Infrastructure Planning Specialist, and a Regional Research Assistant to support an independent Mid‑Term Review of PRIF Phase V.

The review will assess PRIF’s activities, performance, and progress toward its intended outcomes; identify constraints and areas where course corrections may be beneficial; and capture key lessons and recommendations to guide strategic and operational decisions for the remainder of Phase V.

🏗️ PRIF has recently launched a five-part National Building Code Guidance Note Series. One of the new guidance notes focuses on electrical standards, outlining the framework used across Pacific National Building Codes. It explains how AS/NZS 3000 is applied in the South Pacific and how the International Building Code (IBC) framework is used in the North Pacific. 🏢

🚧These notes help Pacific countries strengthen national building codes, improve enforcement, and ensure consistent, effective design and construction standards across the region. 🏗️
