Participant Spotlight: Learning to Listen, Protect, and Walk Alongside Survivors

For Sereima Sauma, Radini Vakatawa of Natokalau Village in Nasinu, Lomaiviti, the recent First Responders Training was more than just learning new skills—it was a journey of personal growth.

Serving alongside her husband in ministry and as someone many women trust for guidance, Sereima discovered the power of active listening, confidentiality, and walking alongside survivors with compassion and care.

"I have come to realize that many of us listen only to reply, not to understand. This training taught me to slow down, listen carefully, and give people the space to share their experiences without interruption or judgment."

Sereima shared that one of her greatest takeaways was understanding that trust is built through listening and protecting the stories that survivors choose to share. She also learned the importance of connecting survivors with professional services and supporting them through the referral process.

Beyond her community work, Sereima is taking these lessons home, choosing to strengthen her relationships with her husband and son through intentional listening, respect, and care.

Her story reminds us that creating safer communities begins with each of us—through the way we listen, respond, and walk alongside those who need support.

💜 Vinaka vakalevu, Sereima, for your commitment to serving women and families in your community with compassion, dignity, and hope.

The FNAP PVAWG Coordination and Implementation Unit met with Nalini Singh and Shayal Nand of the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement for a courtesy meeting and dialogue today, on strengthening collective efforts towards the prevention of violence against all women and girls in Fiji.

The discussion provided an opportunity to reconnect, reflect on shared priorities, and continue building partnerships that support a whole of government and whole of community approach to prevention, response and gender equality.

This initiative is made possible with support from the Australian Government in the implementation of Fiji’s National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls.
