Why does Gender-Based Violence (GBV) data matter in the Pacific?

Jessica Gardner from shares how the Pacific has helped shape global approaches to collecting and using data on violence against women, following discussions at the Pacific Gender-Based Violence Data Workshop held in Fiji in May 2026.

The regionโ€™s experience has helped strengthened evidence-based policies, services and accountability for women and girls around the world.

Because when we have better data, we can drive better action.

On 2 June, more than 100 young people from across the Pacific gathered in Suva and online to discuss their climate priorities, share Pacific realities, and explore youth-led solutions ahead of a critical moment for the region, with Fiji set to host the Pre-COP in October.

Co-designed and co-led by the Pacific United Nations and the Pacific Youth Council, in partnership with the Council of Regional Organizations of the Pacific, which brings together key Pacific regional agencies, the Talanoa Series is creating space for young people to share their lived experiences and help shape the Pacificโ€™s voice in the lead-up to Pre-COP31.

Guest speakers, including Bidisha Pillai, co-chair of the Pacific UN Inter-Agency Working Group on Adolescents and Youth, and Reverend Professor Upolu Luma Vaai from
Pasifika Communities University, welcomed the start of the series and highlighted the importance of placing young people at the centre of climate dialogue.

As the generation already living the realities of the climate crisis, young people across the Pacific are raising their voices, driving solutions and helping shape the future they deserve.

UNFPA Pacific, in partnership with Nauruโ€™s Department of Public Health, conducted a five-day training for 23 young people on the Life Matters health information package.

The training equipped young people in Nauru with essential information, tools and values to make informed choices about their health and futures. Feedback from this cohort will also help ensure the package remains effective, youth-friendly and culturally relevant for future participants.

This initiative is supported by Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade under the Transformative Agenda for Women, Adolescents and Youth.

Big dreams start with the right support! Through Family Life Education (FLE), students arenโ€™t just learningโ€”they are gaining the confidence to speak up, make informed choices, and chase their futures.

This is the power of the Transformative Agenda at work. Implemented by UNFPA Pacific and supported by the Australian Government (DFAT), we are dedicated to empowering young people across the region to take charge of their health, rights, and potential.
