🤝Stronger together for Fiji's rural communities - resilience is a whole-of-ministry commitment.

UNDP and UN Capital Development Fund and Fiji's Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management held a Joint Planning Session, bringing together teams from the UNDP’s Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific (Gov4Res) project, the Pacific Insurance and Climate Adaptation Programme (PICAP), and the Maritime Safety & Security Project – Safeguarding the Blue Pacific.

"These programmes represent more than individual projects. They are strategic investments in Fiji's rural and maritime transformation," said Mitieli Cama, Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management.

As a key Risk-Informed Development (RID) champion, MRMDDM continues to lead efforts that connect governance, disaster risk financing, and community-based resilience — on land and at sea🌊
This includes advancing the safety and security of maritime communities and building financial resilience through literacy programmes that empower people to better prepare for and recover from shocks.

The joint planning session served as an important step in strengthening our coordination, ensuring smooth implementation and reporting, and maximising the impact of our work together for Fijian communities.

Together, we are taking a whole-of-ministry approach to climate resilience and risk-informed development across Fiji. 🇫🇯

PICAP is a joint initiative between the UNCDF, UNDP and United Nations University - EHS.

UNDP Pacific Office is supported in their work with Fiji MRMDDM by the UK in Fiji, Australian High Commission, Fiji, KOICA Fiji Office 코이카 피지 사무소, New Zealand High Commission, Suva, Fiji, Sida - Styrelsen för Internationellt Utvecklingssamarbete, the India in Fiji (High Commission of India, Suva) through the India-UN Partnership Fund and the Government of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Our Resident Representative, Tuya Altangerel, has been in Honiara 🇸🇧 this week. And a big week it has been.

Conversations with ministers, parliament, development partners, and communities working through real challenges. Tropical cyclone recovery, energy costs, natural resources, the youth bulge, electoral support, and more. The work is complex, but the commitment on every side of the table is not 🤝.

While in Honiara 🇸🇧, our Resident Representative and team had the opportunity to visit the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency, FFA - our key partner on the Global Environment Facility-funded Oceanic Fisheries Management Project.

A big tagio tumas to the Director-General and his team for showing us through their monitoring and surveillance facility, much of this vital work underpinning the key decision-making that has turned the Western and Central Pacific Ocean into a global model for sustainable fisheries governance 🎣🌊.

🌿⚡ On the back of World Environment Day, we celebrate another step towards a greener and more resilient Vanuatu.

After bringing 24/7 renewable electricity to 26 settlements across Waterfall, Melsisi and Larimaat, the Vanuatu Green Transformation Project (VGET) is now moving north to Nambwarangiut on Pentecost Island with a new project.

Supported by the Government of Italy thorugh Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Sicurezza Energetica, VGET part II will deliver a hybrid pico-hydro and solar energy system, bringing reliable clean electricity to households, businesses and public institutions in one of the island’s most remote communities.

By harnessing the power of water and sunlight together, the project is helping strengthen long-term energy security, reduce emissions, and improve opportunities for education, health services and local livelihoods.

🌎 Clean energy is not only good for the environment—it is transforming lives.

50 women market vendors from Suva Municipal Market in Fiji recently piloted the SEDE App, marking an exciting step toward digital transformation in local markets.

Developed through the Fiji Innovation Hub and Activator programme, SEDE is a mobile-first platform designed to help vendors easily track daily sales, expenses, and stock turning cash activity into reliable financial records.
For many women vendors who have relied on manual record-keeping, SEDE offers a simpler, more transparent way to manage their businesses and build financial credibility.

In partnership with the Markets for Change project, this pilot highlights how digital tools can empower women entrepreneurs, unlock access to opportunities, and strengthen Fiji’s innovation ecosystem.

The Markets for Change project is implemented by UN Women Pacific in partnership with UNDP Pacific Office in Fiji with support from Australian High Commission, Fiji.

This initiative is supported by Reserve Bank of Fiji and its partners including the United Nations Pacific Digital Economy Programme, European Union in the Pacific, Australian High Commission, Fiji, New Zealand High Commission, Suva, Fiji, Creative HQ, Mastercard, Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, SMEs and Communications, HFC Bank and Fiji Airways.

🌊 The Pacific Ocean is our lifeline but it needs urgent action.

This , UNDP reflects on why coral reefs and a sustainable blue economy are critical to the future of Pacific communities.

From food security and livelihoods to climate resilience and biodiversity, healthy oceans sustain millions across the region. But increasing pressures demand that we accelerate ocean action now.

Through leadership, partnerships, and investment, the Pacific is showing what’s possible but global support must rise to the challenge.
