“What do you know about The Salvation Army?”

That’s usually the first question I ask whenever I visit a school.

Today, I had the opportunity to visit the Grade 7 students at St. Gabriel Catholic Elementary School after receiving a call from their teacher about a fundraiser they had organized for The Salvation Army Windsor Centre of Hope.

One student answered:

“An agency that helps people in need.”

Not a bad start.

As we talked about our shelter, food bank, housing support, and community programs, the questions started coming:

“Do you have children staying at the shelter?”
“When does the shelter have the most clients?”

I always enjoy this part of the conversation because it shows students are trying to understand what life can look like for people facing difficult circumstances.

Toward the end, I gave them a challenge.

Imagine you have a very limited budget. Would you spend it on food or housing?

The room split into two groups.

Some chose food because people need to eat.

Others chose housing because everyone needs a safe place to stay.

There was no correct answer. In reality, many individuals and families face these kinds of impossible choices every day.

A big thank you to the students and staff of St. Gabriel Catholic School for their thoughtful questions and for raising $490.75 in support of our community.

The donation is appreciated, but the conversations were just as meaningful.

Home is sweeter when the whole family gets there. 🐾

When Theresa and Brian arrived at the Centre, they came with an important family member by their side — Minnie.

From the very beginning, they took an active role in their housing search. They attended viewings, explored different options, and remained committed to finding a place they could truly call home. Throughout the process, they often shared updates with staff, and it was easy to see how excited they were each time they got one step closer.

That excitement grew even more when they found the place that felt right.

One thing Theresa and Brian spoke highly of was their new landlord. They shared how understanding, patient, and supportive they had been throughout the rental process. Having someone willing to answer questions and work with them helped make the transition feel less overwhelming and more hopeful.

For Theresa, having a place where she can finally rest and reunite with the other dogs currently being cared for elsewhere means a great deal. For Brian, it represents a fresh start and the opportunity to continue building the future they have been working toward together.

And then there is Minnie.

After visiting the new home, Minnie wasted no time exploring her new surroundings. It did not take long to see that she was just as excited about the move as Theresa and Brian were.

Their story is a reminder that finding a home is about more than four walls and a roof. It is about having a place where you can feel safe, comfortable, and together.

Please join us in wishing Theresa, Brian, and Minnie all the best as they settle into this new chapter.

A simple coffee gathering. A lasting tradition.

For many years, residents at Southwinds Seniors CLAS III have been collecting food donations through their Saturday morning Coffee Klatch, supporting local charities throughout Windsor-Essex on a rotating basis.

This month, it was The Salvation Army Windsor Centre of Hope’s turn to receive their generosity.

Over the past two months, residents filled box after box with canned goods, pasta, cereal, and other non-perishable food items. Today, those donations found a new home on our Food Bank shelves, where they will help support individuals and families facing food insecurity in our community.

What makes this donation especially meaningful is that it represents something bigger than food. It represents neighbours caring for neighbours, a tradition of giving, and a community that continues to look after one another.

To the residents of Southwinds Seniors CLAS III, thank you for your kindness, generosity, and commitment to helping others.

Your coffee conversations are creating real change in our community.

🍩 National Doughnut Day 🍩

Today, our residents celebrated National Doughnut Day with icing, sprinkles, creativity, and plenty of smiles.

While doughnuts are certainly a sweet treat, this day has a deeper connection to The Salvation Army. National Doughnut Day honours the “Doughnut Lassies,” the Salvation Army volunteers who served doughnuts to soldiers during the First World War, bringing a small taste of home during difficult times.

More than a century later, we continue that tradition of connection and community in our own way.

Residents learned a little about the history behind the day before decorating their own doughnuts, creating colourful masterpieces that were almost too good to eat.

Almost. 🍩❤️

A journey of hope, resilience, and determination.

Congratulations to Solange on graduating from our Pathway of Hope program.

Over the past year, Solange committed herself to working toward greater financial stability, securing housing, and building a new life in Canada. Through hard work, perseverance, and a willingness to keep moving forward, she achieved the goals she set for herself despite the many challenges that came along the way.

Pathway of Hope is not a quick fix. It is a long-term, goal-focused program that requires commitment, trust, and consistent effort from both participants and staff. Every graduation represents months of dedication, growth, and personal achievement.

At The Salvation Army, we do not simply celebrate the completion of a program. We celebrate the courage it takes to begin a journey, the determination to keep going, and the achievement of reaching goals that once seemed out of reach.

Solange’s graduation is a reflection of her resilience, hard work, and commitment to building a brighter future. Her journey reminds us that meaningful change takes time, but with perseverance, support, and hope, remarkable progress is possible.

Please join us in celebrating Solange’s achievement and congratulating her on this important milestone. We are honoured to have been part of her journey and look forward to all that lies ahead.

Congratulations, Solange!

Some people leave footprints long before they leave the building.

Today, Patrick and his cat Timmy are beginning a new chapter.

Since arriving at the Centre earlier this year, Patrick has become a familiar face in many of our programs and activities. Whether it was joining a game of Bingo, participating in activities, sharing conversations, or simply offering a helping hand to others, Patrick brought a sense of kindness and community wherever he went.

One thing many people may not know about Patrick is his interest in computers and programming. As he prepares for this next step, he is looking forward to having a space of his own where he can focus on his interests, continue learning, and build toward his goals.

And as if the day wasn’t already special enough, Patrick also had quite a send-off. Before moving out, he joined the morning Bingo session and managed to win all three prizes: single line, two lines, and full card. It brought plenty of smiles to the room and felt like a fitting way to celebrate the start of a new chapter.

While we will miss seeing Patrick and Timmy around the Centre, we are excited for what lies ahead for them.

Join us in wishing Patrick and Timmie all the best as they settle into their new home. 🐾

💧 Community Kindness in Action

Today, we picked up 50 more cases of water thanks to the efforts of Charmaine Scott and her community-driven Water Challenge initiative.

We are truly grateful for Charmaine Scott’s dedication and for every donor, supporter, and community member who contributed through this challenge. Your kindness and generosity will help support individuals experiencing homelessness during the hot summer days ahead.

As temperatures continue to rise, access to water becomes increasingly important for many of the people we serve each day. While the days ahead may be hot, we do not mind this kind of “warmth” from our community.

Thank you for helping us continue Giving Hope Today.
